Welcome to the board. Is the cigarette lighter working? If not check the CIG/ACCY fuse in the panel inside the car, it also powers the DLC.

it could be a transmission code. the autozone scanner only reads engine codes. then again, with their scanner not coming on at all, means there is no power getting to the ALDL connector.

Pay the man.
Having the code read for free by some random parts counter guy is pointless. If, for example, a p0174 was stored, are you just gonna buy a mass air flow sensor for your car because he tells you that's gonna fix it? If you can't get the scantool to power up at all, consider using a scan tool with an aux. input for power and an alternate known good power supply, such as the cig. lighter, or a direct feed from the battery.
If you're not willing/unable to pay the money to have the car properly diagnosed by a qualified tech, or you are unable to do it yourself, mark my words, you WILL waste money and time throwing parts at the problem. Just trying to help you out; that money could go to better uses, like mods!

Mrr23, transmission codes on OBDII cars will show up on any scanner or code reader as a 'P' code. Transmissions can/will set 'P' codes in the event of a malfunction, such as 'Transmission component slipping' (p1870) Not all codes will be defined by all scanners though, although a code number will still be given.
