I study it, I have 6 amature fights and im 5 - 0 - 1 (draw). Like someone said above, belts dont mean shit. It's all about tournaments. I won our light heavyweight 12 man tournament above my 6 fights. I've been practicing about a year and half. I study BBJ, Vale Tudo, Muay Thai Kickboxing, and Regular boxing. I also wrestled in highschool/football. There is no comparison to rolling around with someone on a mat, than any other workout. I've lifted weights and ran track since I was 13 and this stuff gets me WAY more tired. It's awesome.

Believe it or not...they are different. I like the no GI stuff but learning with the GI will give you your basis for everything. I think both of those are worth it. I had to quit for a while due to a divorce and conserving funds......but I plan on getting back in there as soon as I can.
yeah i had to quit to (new business, new wife, new house) i went to an mma style bbj class and loved it. not a big fan of GI's. those just seemed like they would be boring. they are prob good for learning technique where you dont have to worry bout gettin punched for puttin your arm here or leg there. very hard though had to keep stoppin for the 1st month cuz my lungs were burnin.

buy a billy blanks video if you want a work out... if you want to learn self defense then take classes... it sounds to me like you won't be very commited to it if there isn't a solid work out...

Im sure I'll stay commited to it. I have always wanted to learn to fight. I guess I emphasized the work out part too much and not the part where I do want to learn.

just do push ups at home... focus on learning while you are there the work out you get there will be great... but doing the push ups at home will help you to focus better...

Don't worry about a workout....you will get that whether you want it or not. Make sure you really focus on learning the technique. The better technique you have the more smooth you will be and the easier everything will become. Becoming smooth will open up many options in BJJ. Like stated above, don't worry about belts. Too many schools are quick to give out belts and make their students think they are really becoming an expert....until they face someone that is really at their level and get shown what BJJ is. It is by far my favorite art that I have taken.

Sorry, I forgot to mention in my first post, "The Protector" was the title of the American release of "Tom Yum Goong". Probably easier to find it as the protector.

I took ninjitsu for like 2 years when I was a teen. I loved all the tool work, training in the water, how to fight dogs, all the practices were done in the dark. Our instuctions said that "80% of all fights happen at night SO GET USE TO IT!" plus we never used Gi's just street clothes he said "you never know when you have to fight, you have a jacket one leave it on, high heels leave it on, the other guy wont wait for you to change, SO GET USE TO IT!!" The worst was we didnt stretch or warm up... again.. "the other guy isnt going to wait for you to do your jumping jacks SO GET USE TO IT!!" He use to take us out in the parking lot and practice between parked cars, in the sand, on stairs. He would teach girls how to use their purse and heels as weapons. "to a ninja everything is a tool, from your belt bucket to your car keys" The whole hinding in shadows and smoke bombs isn't going to work but you still need to learn the history part too. Its a fun system to lean if you can find a place..

Yea that is the way I see it, I never really understood why do all the stretching and stuff unless your in it for the sport only use. Sounds like you had a great teacher, mine was pretty similar.

I took M.T. , BJJ, savata, kali, kempo on a off over the years. I like the arts better then the gym because it keeps me thinking and I stay more engaged. Dont even notice it was a work out. The stretching can be a good thing. Better ranch and leaner muscle, but it not for everyone. Its important in BJJ but if you train in BJJ your partner will stretch you out anyway haha..
