Dex cool vs Anti freeze (green)
I just picked up my 2000 yukon, it has the 5.7 vortec in it. So as i do with all used vehicles i did all of the regular tune up stuff. when i got to checking the coolant it had green anti freeze instead of dexcool. I have heard horror stories about this, what do i do from here? The coolant overflow tank needed topped off so i did it with regular green anti freeze, figuring that is what is in it now so it cant do any more harm.
Thanks for the help.

Dexcool (orange) from what I've been told can gum up and cause big problems if it's not flushed and replaced with universal pre-mixed. The previous owner saved you the trouble and switched over. I think your Yukon is in good shape.
When I bought my Z used at 50K the orange stuff was in it and there was a coating of it sticking to everything! I thought it had ruined the radiator, etc. but after the forced flush it cleaned up really well. Got lucky, I've heard some horror stories.

There's nothing wrong with the green anti-freeze or Dex Cool. I've ran both for years and actually had more problems with the green probably due to contaminated water. I've run 100% Dex-Cool in all my vehicles for the last 15 years with no issues at all. I think it's moreless a preference of the two.
Dex-Cool (ethylene glycol) is identical to the Chrysler & General Motors factory fill. Havoline had the original patent on Dex-Cool and manufactures it for GM. The benefits of Dex-Cool are:
Lower alkalinity
Contains NO silicates, resulting in longer lasting water pump and engine seals; longer shelf life.
It is Nitrite-, borate-, phosphate-, nitrate- and amine-free.
100% biodegradable in its pure unused condition.
Longer lasting (Dex-Cool has been shown to remain above 95% of its original concentration after 150,000 miles in automobiles)
Here's a good article to read if have a little time.
