Buy the install kit its really helpful but as long as you get series 3 carrier you should be fine.

Well when you buy it should say what carrier it is and i have heard motives are pretty quiet. which is good

I bought the GM gears but Motive are made by GM. They make the least noise and are the best for your car. I also used the master install kit that came with everything. May as well change everything since your in there. Its pretty much an easy install. Just use the same shims on both sides of the carrier.

Do you know where to find a step by step instructions on how to do this install, I also have a 2000 automatic and was looking at putting a gear in. I am not to mechanically inclined but I think I could do it with some simple instructions. And the best gear to go with is a 3.73 right? It is my daily driver. I also want to get the install done before I have it dynoed so they can tune the car to recognize the gear. Thanks for the help, Chris

I used this and its very helpful. I have never done gears either and I had no problems with these instructions. Just make sure you have the tools and a press is helpful on the bearings.

Not sure the cost, depends on the mechanic. Of course gas mileage will decline with lower gears. You wanna play, you gotta pay. But the launch with a stall converter is awesome.

350-500 for GM gear installs usually. If you are not mechanically inclined and dont have the proper tools DONT install gears.

To have a trouble free/whine free many miles of fun out of them you bet. I had people offer to do it for like 250 but those are some of those redneck deals. I wouldn't trust a redneck deal on 2 things auto transmissions and GM rear ends , which is why I got a pro built trans and ford rear end

You won't see much if any difference with a M6 and 4.10's over the 3.73's in terms of gas mileage. Hell I got 4.10's in an Auto and it's nowhere near as bad as I expected going from a 2.73.Even with the stall I still am getting low 20's if I keep my foot out of it. But then again 90% of my drive is highway and When it goes into lockup 70 mph cruise is about 2700 rpms.

you will need a press and dial indicators to get you pinion depth and backlash set correctly. do you know what gears you have now? it will determine if you have a 2 series carrier (2.73-3.08) or 3 series carrier (3.23-3.73). here's a webpage i made on how to swap gears.
