Steering Issues
In the last couple of months my steering wheel went from feeling tight to now very loose.
My rack and pinion is fairly new. Roommate says steering knuckle. Read through all the past threads and no one replied back about if things got fixed, etc.
What could be possibly causing this?

any vibrations from the steering wheel as you drive?

Nope. None at all.
Still very responsive, just "slack" in it.

Have you checked all of the tie rods?

How old is the pump?
You'll need someone to look or turn the wheel.
With the vehicle off, try to slightly turn the wheel, but not enough to turn the wheel. Look to see how much free play you have on the steering shaft.Last edited by SMWS6TA; 10-01-2014 at 10:11 AM.

Slack usually indicates worn parts -- it is a rack and pinion so even if the pump is whipped the steering input will result in movement of the wheels, just the effort to move it will be increased. There is a clamp bolt where the steering shaft connects to the rack -- I would check this ASAP to ensure that it has not come loose and the "D" shaft is wearing away.

D shaft? I'll check that clamp bolt, but that other thing, no clue.

Steering effort decrease? Free play in the wheel or the wheel itself flopping around like Michael J Fox?

That 11mm bolt from the steering column into the rack was about to fall out. I tightened the crap out of it and my awesome steering is back. Yay!!!
