95 Formula: Alternator, computer or wiring issue?

The ABS light kept coming on for a few days. Then, the alternator gauge showed showed charging at about 7 volts. Lights got dim. Local garage guy put in a new Bosch alternator. Same problem, only that one got very hot. Rebuilt my old stock alternator. Worked for a few days, now back to charging at 7 volts after a restart on the way home after stopping at a store. Obviously, this will drain the battery in no time.

Battery checked out fine via an electronic test.

What to consider? Computer? Short? Help!

Grounds and connections are always the first place to start, especially on an older vehicle. Are you verifying the voltage readings with a DVOM, or relying on the gauge in the car?

I'm on the road in Nowheresville, so do not have access to anything but my dashboard gauge and the sight of my lights dimming. However, the mechanic who changed out the alternator professes to have checked all that, at least what feeds to the alternator.

Well, "dimming lights" certainly answers the question on whether the gauge is accurate or not. Unfortunately "new parts" do not always mean "good parts" even with the stuff you used to rebuild your stock alternator.

I'll be taking it into the local NAPA shop Monday AM. At least their work is warranted across North America; I'm guessing my "recommended guy" has no clue. A list of stuff to check would be appreciated.

Wiring to the alternator should be checked for any loose/broken connections. All grounds in the engine bay and beneath the car should be inspected/cleaned of rust.
