    Do drilled/sloted rotors make noise?

man alot of of you are prolly getting tired of me posting so many thereads...lol. But I like to solve issues with my cars and keep them up to speed. Here we go....

I'm trying to figure out this noise that I have in my passenger side.
I almost sound like when a bearing is dry or is going bad. Now, i had taken the car to 2 different places and they check the tires and said that the tires are good and no bent wheels. i also have the tires rebalanced.

They also told me that the rear end is good. They hear alittle bit of noise on the passenger rear axle bearing but nothing major. They also told me that my passenger rear axle might be slightly bent. The thing is that I hear the noise more in the passenger front.

They only thing I did recently was to put all new brake rotors from R1 concept in all 4 wheels and new red stuff EBC brake pads. I drove the car now with them for about 500 miles. I don't recall having the noise as soon as I put the new rotors in. I lubricated the pin slide outs with brake caliper grease in all 4 of them. i cleaned all the brake dust and rust from the hub/axle assemblies before putting the new rotors in.

I keep hearing that these rotors make some noise but only at braking. I mostly hear the noise in the front passenger at driving all the time specially after 25 mph and it increases with speed.

I know that it could be the tire but if I rotate the tire the noise is still kinda there(it goes to the back a bit).
I have almost no vibration in the front(very minimal at different speeds). I have vibration on the back.

Could it be rotors making noise? like the pads dragging on them? or could the front wheel bearing be going bad too? or could the rear bearing noise project all the way to the front? I don't have any play in the front bearings when I move them with the tire. thanks guys.

I've had D&S rotors for a number of years now and I find they are prone to a low "roaring" noise during moderate to strong braking. At light to normal braking, I don't notice a difference. I'm using ceramic pads. I'm happy with the braking improvement, so I live with the added noise. Definitely a good trade-off. Hope that helps.

Oh it brakes fantastic but my noise problem is not during braking, is during driving.

Mine are also under medium to hard braking with the groaning, no noise at any other time.

R1 replied saying that the pads could bitting on the slots creating noise. These are EBC brake pads, they are quite expensive to just throw away and get new ones. Any suggestions? I'm think to get me some cheap pads and swap them to chek for the noise. I used hawk performance before with problems in my old slotted discs.

After switiching my rotors to drilled and slotted I also installed the EBC brake pads, and I get some kind of a "salt and pepper shaker" sound almost like someone is shaking them while i'm driving and it get's more steady while braking.....At that time I also changed out my rims that I think made it more "open" to allow for more sound to exit if that makes any sense....So to answer your question I also have the sound if it is the same.....

hmm im not sure if i compare it to a salt shaker but is it kinda of loud. I just wonder why is it on one side only. I check everything and the installation is fine. I put caliper grease in the pins too. So I guess that just the way it is. I can either live with it or pull the rotors out and sell them and get me some blanks. naa thats too much work lol

I would go after the wheel bearing assemblies on that side front and back, you may not feel a thing but they can be dry and make alot of noise when moving. The ones I replaced on my 2000 Grand Prix fell apart on the backside when I removed them but I felt no play either.

this is along the lines of what I was thinking.....if it's a non-braking noise I would look at the wheel hub probably. Doesn't really sound like much to me though and you may have to wait until it gets worse or at least louder so you can track it down.

yeah im kinda inclining more towards the wheel hub assemblies and rear axle bearings. Anyone has the GM part number for the hubs and the rear axles bearings and seals? I heard is best to get them GM but like usual the stealer ship wants way too much money.

Is a stock 10 bolt, A4. I think i heard the rear end is 7.5 inches.

I thought it was hub assemblies for the front and rear? and they are not cheap for OEM brand.

no, the back has axles and bearings. Yeah I know the hubs are like 180 each in autozone. I just read that so many ppl recommend getting at least the rear bearings and seals GM becuase of the aftermarket ones falling. I'm trying to look for Mogul bearings if I go aftermarket I used them in my early cars with no problem. I also heard that if the axle is scorched that there is a repair bearing I can use. I never used one of those. Do you just install it like a regular bearing?

I couldn't agree more. I've seen so many bad cheap hubs. There are very hit or miss.

as painfully expensive as it is, I always get/recommend the GM one.
