Fluid change?
My '00 Z28 has about 64,000 miles. I dont know if the tranny fluid has ever been changed. Will it be safe to flush my M6 with this many miles on it?

Yes it is safe, like Junky says, why would it not? Good PM idea. While your at it, flush the coolant, new fuel filter too, unless that has already been done. Search the threads here, there is a lot of advice on what type of maintenence to do.

Well, the only reason I thought it wouldn't be safe is I thought that over time, metal shavings and stuff would gather in there, and if the fluid doesn't get changed by a certain time, then its bad to do it. Like the trans would mess up or something, thats just what I was told at one point.

I had mine changed recently (61K miles).
Seems to shift a bit smoother.Cheers,

All right, I guess I'll change mine then too. It is OE fluid. I will get it done before winter

Transmissions are typically due for servicing every 30k miles same goes for the rear end. radiators are supposedly due every 100k but I prefer to do it more than that.

Changed mine at 30k. Its easy to do yourself. Tried royal purple and did not like it. Went back to gm.

Don't put anything other than GM reccomended fluid in these trannys wether it be the M6 or A4, Dexron III is what use to be in it, but it doesn't meet GM standards anymore, they use something else now, I just switched mine too it can't remember the name though, call up your local GM dealer and ask them.

Its Dexron IV I think. As long as its Dexron it will work just fine.

When these cars were built it was dexron auto tranny fluid for the 6 speeds. Dexron III will work fine.
You can experiment with sythetics here if you wish. Thats what I run in our 6 speed car. Problem is it's harder to find GM dexron recommended fluid in synthetic,,,,,I have found dexron synthetic in Mobil,,and that worked fine. My most recent fluid change I gave Royal Purple a shot,,,,seems to work fine also for us.
Anyone else been able to find synthetic dexron in any other brands??? I just haven't seen it in the parts stores other than what I mentioned above..

I used Mobil 1 Synthetic ATF in my trans and it seems to be very good fluid. Trans runs cooler and it shifts much better in the colder weather.
I recently read that you shouldn't use GM Dexron VI in our transmissions though. Even though its backwards compatible with Dexron III and good for all automatics, apparently its incompatible with something in our transmissions, I think the issue was with the blocker rings. Maybe someone can confirm this.
