Silly noobie catch can question
So....if the catch can is meant to grab oil so it doesn't go back into the intake.
How often and how much oil is in the can over a given time period?
I love asking the silliest noobie questions,.
thanks

a follow silly questions is routing the lines off of the valve covers.
Is there any reason not to bring both valve cover lines up to the front of the engine and T connect them there? I mean why bust your knuckles on the back area of the engine bay if you don't have too. Do people leave it in the back for clean looks? Do you do it because you need a close to equal length hose off of the valve covers? So do you have to T connect in the rear?

1 qt per 1000ft of travel time.
ok maybe not. just depends on how hard you drive the car and how much blow by is happening due to age of the motor.Cold Air Intake, Muffler Delete, Vinci High Performance Dual Valve Springs, Hardened Pushrods, Yella Terra 1.85 Rockers, Some Hydropdipped Stuff, Strut Tower Brace, Some SS Badges, boost/vacuum gauge, fuel pressure gauge, some checkered stripes, drilled/slotted rotors, ZL1addons Stealth wickerbill, Ruxifey LED side markers

So how often do you check yours? I know you run at the track and stuff.
My question about the lines was not specific to catch cans. I was thinking about replacing the hard plastic lines and wasn't sure if there was a need to have the lines T at the back. I saw a catch can picture that had the T at the front. It just seems anything I can do to make my life easier, but if there is a specific reason to make the T junction at the back, then I guess that is what it will be.

i don't have one. they "T"ed it at the back for less hose running from the back to the front. less cost.

Ah. Oh that's right you have that monster 408 under the hood.
So I guess If I want to I can run both lines up to the front. I just don't feel like taking half the engine apart to get back there.

all your doing is running the can in series with the PCV line
Imagine cutting the line in half and fitting the can in the middle to join it back up again.
You may have to extend a hose or 2 but if you keep the above in mind you cant go wrong
There's a very detailed diagram detailing the first LS1's with the external PCV system and the newer LS1's with the LS6 manifold and how they are setup with a single or twin can setup.
Ill have a look around and see if i can find it
Here's the LS1 with the LS6 intake

thanks. in a different post about my PVC problem someone posted a really nice LS1 photo showing where the lines are on the valve covers. Man talk about a tight spot. One day when I'm not being lazy I plan to replace the hard plastic lines with the nice fuel/emissions rubber hose.

As long as you have a return from both valve covers (or the valley cover for the LS6 LSX) going to the PCV it doesn't matter how you route them.
Average catch can "catch" is about 1/4 quart or less per 1000 miles.

I'm not sure I follow you on the LS6 comment? Are you referring to the block or intake? I have an 02 Camaro. I just assumed the lines run from each valve cover to a T and then one line to the PCV finally up to the front of the intake. I have seen pictures of a 99 Camaro, but that would be the LS1 intake.
I'm not sure if there is a difference in the plumbing. I know every time i try to follow the line back i lose it in all the mess.

The LS6 blocks have the breather on the valley cover, not the valve covers but don't worry about that since we are talking about the valve cover connections.

Not necessarily the LS6 block its self, any LSX with the LS6 intake.
Its not that hard, have a look at your TB and you'll have 1 pipe leading to it from the valve cover.
And one pipe will be just behind the TB on the intake manifold neck.
The pipe on the TB draws air from the intake tube side of the butterfly valve and the other returns air to the motor/manifold side of the butterfly valve.
The later pipe (motor/manifold side) will be the pipe that runs the oily air back into the intake.
That's the side you need to cut and add the catch can into
