I have an 02 SS with stock manifolds and was wondering how hard it would be to put headers on. Is it better to get shorties or long tubes, and what brand does everyone recommend.

Long tubes will help you get the breathing the best. You'll definitely need a lot of time I suggest you use a lift if you can find one.
get long tubes , i have pacesetter and they pretty easy to put on but i have a lift..
yeah i couldn't imagine not haven a lift when i did my LT install
i have hedman LTs and the drivers side was pretty hard but got it all done in 4 hrs and it was my first time
I did the install in the driveway on my LT1. A lift would have definately been useful.
I installed my Pacesetters on jackstands this weekend. It was a bitch but definately better than paying someone anywhere from $300 to $500 to do it. The Pacesetters fitment is very good, sound is great and power is there. I am definately happy with them.
I'm having a speed shop install my pacesetters & 3in off road y-pipe cost $375.00
Thanks for the offer, I'm also having some other work done by Bier bros. performance. I could do the work myself but choose not to. Where in st.louis do live? I'm in Hazelwood
I'm in St. Charles.
Bier Bros? They are expensive compared to some of the other shops around here. How did you manage to get only $350 for labor on a header install? I called them and they quoted me $500 for a header install.
No offense, but I was building cars long before you were even a blueprint.
They are doing a bunch of other work on my firehawk just clowning with ya about the blueprint
ok...
How did you get such a low rate from Bier Bros?
I'm having cam, headers, y-pipe master cyl slave complete clutch system 373 gears, and both knock sensors done for 3000.00 out the door.
Hey black LT1 Z28 here is my cell #591-0693 call me.
I didnt think so either plus they will reset all the codes & tune
Longtubes are easy to install, you dont really need a lift, just use stands and use a block with the jack in top of it and the car would go really high, and the header slips right in, and in the driver side is even easier but just have to cut the tab from the block.
in detroit my speed shop want almost $800 just for install on headers. he said would gve me adeal w pacestrs and install for 1250. lol i know
Thanks for the replies from all, I just don't feel like doing the work, I was a mechanic for 20 yrs. I would rather let a reputable shop do the work and have a warranty. I do work on my firehawk but didn't want to tackel cam, headers, gears, & the rest of the work.
You're a mechanic, but you're not going to do the install yourself??
Its not like you're pulling the motor apart or anything...do you just not have a place to do it??
I'm no professional mechanic, but I do all the mods/work that I can possible do myself.
I've found that if I don't do it myself, all too many times it doesn't get done right. Regardless of who's doing it
I think spending $3K would be enough incentive for me to do it myself if I could. Its either spend some time doing it or be out $3K after its all said and done. Shit, I'd rather keep the 3K...
I'm sorry but no self respecting mechanic lets anyone touch his car. Not to mention that blueprint comment leads me to believe our "20 year mechanic" probably isn't even 20 years old.
First off I'm not 20 yrs old, I wish I could be that age again, or even your age 28 but I,m not .I've been here for a little longer 53 yrs to be exact. You are right about some places cutting corners and such I agree, and I can do the work myself, but I choose to have a reputable shop like Bier Bros Performance to do it for me. They do very good work. The money is not an Issue the price is for parts & labor +tax out the door with a warranty. That is good enough for me.:drivin:
if you have any experience, do it yourself, it will be fun and worth it
That's the number one reason I work on my cars. Everytime I've ever let anyone touch my cars it's never done correctly. Example. I had my subframes welded in basically because I can't weld for shit or I would've did them myself. So they guy welds my red powdercoated subframes in and paints the welds and 6" around the welds with black spray paint. Come on, use your head. If I would've wanted black subframes I would've ordered them that way. I repainted them when I got the car back home. Moron.
Thanks Black LT1 Z28, the warranty covers all parts and labor. If it breaks they will fix it. All of the parts I bought thru them and is covered as long as they are not brutilized. My firehawk is for car shows, cruzin & fun, dont get me wrong I go to the drag strip once in a while and let her eat, but my hawk is 1 of 4 that was produced by SLP in 99. I bought it for that reason, and to enjoy.
Gees Rare99, You'd think that with 20 years experience you could do that yourself & save the money! What the hell were you thinking?!?
Plus you'd get to have parts strung out all over your one stall garage, fightin' for lights, breakin' yer knuckles, searchin' for the right tool, ..., going uptown to buy the damn right tool, ..., It just goes on & on.
Less headche route? Hire a reputable shop to do it.
Have it done & enjoy the ride aferwards! :itsok:
Now, ..., Someone in/near central Nebraska wanna do an FLP header & Y-pipe installation for me for $50? $100? $200? And gaurantee your work?!?
The scenario you describe is not of a mechanic but of someone that's just learning. Back in the old days I would do all of those but after a couple of years I finally have pretty much all the tools, keep them organized, and keep spare lightbulbs in the garage. :D
20 yrs.as a mechanic $30,000 in tools,(neatly organized) in 2 MB1500 series toolboxes, garage with heat & lighting but still I'd rather pay $3000toa reputable shop to do the work
So you just dont WANT to do them. Laziness is the enemy, no?
get off his case guys, if he's got the money its cool, saves a lot of headaches
You see, Rare99 is just like my dad. He at one time had the fastest Camaro in Dallas, TX. Now he doesn't get his hands dirty. There is nothing wrong with that, he has paid his dues. His rear end went out on his blazer and he sat on the ground next to me and told me what to do. I wanted to do it because I am still learning and he wants to teach. If I wasn't here to help him I'm sure he would just put it in the shop.
Tell yah what... how about you change out the heads, headers, and cam on your car for 20 years. Say you have the spare money to have someone else do it. Are you gonna jump under that car again or are you gonna put it in the shop for some young buck to do it while you drink a beer and watch the game?
Ya know I think your all a pretty cool bunch of guyes! Every body razes some one, and no body gets bent. If theres a need to k:cheers: now LS1 is the place to go....
Tonkin I couldn't of said it any better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:drivin:
^ +1 silent bob
i acutually beat the floor pan in with a hammer on the drivers side and the header just sliped right in baby !!!!!!!!!! yawkamean
