Take the Stock GM LS Engine. We are trying to learn everything about it's limits and we will tell you the results. We get an understandable amount of flack from readers about doing so much editorial on the GM LS-series engines, but there's a reason behind our madness: They're the most popular performance engines today and make completely stupid power when you throw boost at them via a supercharger or turbocharger. Internet forums are all atwitter about just how far up the power scale you can go before the LS finally yells ôuncle,ö but we have yet to see any real proof of its limits. So we decided to find out for ourselves. How much boost can we throw at one, and how much power will it make (and for how long?) before it goes pop in one way or another?

That is crazy!!!!!

^ thats no shit.........

So you're saying I'm OK with 8psi then? That's pretty damn impressive.

Getting 1200 HP from 300 cid at 27 psi is just sick. I would think 8 psi is a safe number if your engine is in good shape to start with. So, what is the limit for an LS engine ????

It appears as though the sky's the limit according to that article. Pretty freakin amazing.

JEE...ZUSSSSSS!!!! :wtf:

Detonation is what kills engines most of the time.

That small lil 4.8 didn't break. I still can't believe it.

so uhhh.... i feel the need for boost all of a sudden.

but then again NA power is fun and reliable.... trick flows and a cam??? already have the intake and headers.... hmmmm

Boost is REAL fun...not just fun :D

Boost is alot of fun. The more boost, the more fun. Breakage is the only thing you have to worry about.

As I am sure you know, if you wanna play, you've gotta pay!

Well aware of this quote

Hmm...when I finally go boosted, I guess I'll be keeping the cubes small and putting my 427 into another car.

holy crap, I'd like to see if cubes really do make the difference. Throw that setup on an ls1 and see what happens.

There is no replacement for displacement. I think Big Daddy said that.

I think this article disproves that theory completely.

Kind of agree with this. Small displacement engines LOVE boost.

Yeah, but I'm not sure how I can go from a 427ci to a 325ci and still brag about it...granted I'll have two turbos, but still...

How about a 427 with a turbo. Why not have the best of both worlds. If the engine is put on an 8 to 10 psi boost you should be well in the range of 700 plus HP.

Two problems with that.

1. My 427 is 11.8:1 compression, not very good for FI.
2. Right now, I'm eyeing that 600rwhp mark with my N/A 427. If I'm going to drop $5k-$10k on a nice Turbo or Supercharger install, I'm going to want more than 700rwhp.

Like I said earlier, for my next build, I'm going to completely remove my 427 LS3, install it into a RX-7 or Miata, and build a new motor using the LSX block, and THEN put a turbo or supercharger in front of it.

Not really. I am willing to a bet a LS1 built for boost wont make the same amount of power as a LSx of 500ci built for boost. :) Thus cubes wins.

That 427 better be built for FI. Whats nice is that the LS1 isnt a SUPER high compression ratio engine so you can boost it pretty easily.

You know that quote means "displacement only"...it's common sense that boosted hp increases with cubes.

that is just, nuts. All they really did was change the ring gapping seriously? So youre saying if i popped my ls1 out and put new rings on it with new gappings i could do this with my car?! haha

Guess it depends on what you want to brag about. Having 550rwhp with a 427ci motor or having it with a 325ci. Naturally, getting more power from a NA engine deserves more bragging rights. Bottom line though is winning is winning :)

That's cool and all, but let's see how it holds up on the street with some stress on the motor. Easy to spin a motor with no strain on it.

You can brag all you want after kicking some Mustang Ass. It doesn't how you get there, just get there first.
