has anyone ever relocated their coil packs to another location off the valve covers?
I know I can hide them with fuel rail covers but I still think they take away from the engine.

I don't think you can relocate them. Because you need the wires plugged into the packs, you would need to get either get an extension (if there is something like that) or maybe a different spark plug wire that is longer. Kinda depends on how far you are looking at relocating them.
Plug Wires wouldn't be a problem because you can get them in custom sizes. I figure an extension for the wire harness was a must.
I see Thunder Racing has a kit that mounts under the cowling. I'm not liking it. IMHO not a good spot to mount. Makes it more difficult to get to and would interfere with FRCs.
But it doesn't mean I can make my own. At least it gives me a couple of ideas.
I have an idea for you. You could get a bracket for the battery and fuse box and mount them on that around them. Another Idea if you could get the room to do this would to some how mount them under the airbox assembly or what about on the firewall of each side of the engine.
I thought of those areas. Maybe move the battery to the spare tire location and then use that space for the coil packs.
They make a kit to relocate the coil packs under the cowl. Not sure of the brand or details though.
:haha:
what do you think of relocate the battery and place them there?
Would increasing the distance cause a misfire?
Kind of a long run to the driver side from there.
yeah I'm going to have to look at that.
Subscribed.. If you guys can find a good spot for 8 coils.. I'd like to maybe use that same spot for 3...:firedevil:
Ok, I'm going out on a limb here but... I've heard of kits to relocate them to the framerails(not my word).
:hide:
I have an idea that should work, you could relocate them to inside the front fenders. The passenger side would get routed under the battery. I haven't figured out how the other side gets routed but I think if you go down from where they are normally are there is a space where they should fit through to the fender. I believe this should work. :D The one downside would be that you would have to remove your fender when you need to replace the coils, but those don't fail that often and definately not all of them. Wonder if an access panel could be fabricated to give easier access.
Are you talking about where the air pump is?
It would work for guys like me that have removed egr and the air pump systems. But again it would be more of an inconvenience to change the coils. Another thing about that spot would be exposure to water when it rains.
Might be talking about the space above the plastic fender liners. I relocated all my wiring on the passenger side into this cavity. Not sure if there would be enough depth for coils though.
I borrowed a members pic here because he had a great shot of his engine bay.

The yellow bars are proposed area that might be locations I proposed for the coils.
I would need to measure the coils and try to figure the spacing between the hood and those areas.
Comments?
I know I have seen them mounted in front of the wheel wells before -- maybe in GMHTP.
Here's another location. I got this from another site.

^ this is what i am going to do.....i would be weary about a lot of these relocation ideas coming in..remember..every wire should be the same size..last thing you want is latency and longer wait to get spark..it will mess with timing etc....i like the K.I.S.S method personally
LOL.
I do like that idea though.
I would try and mount them as close as possible. So misfire won't be an issue, like it could be running them all from the battery location.
I wonder if clearance is an issue with light blue locations? That's where I think it would work out well. Designing whole brackets to remove them (4 at a time) would be convenient.

I found a write up on a corvette forums about what I am talking about. Here is the link: http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c5-t...many-pics.html
that link is god awful.......making extensions for sparkplug wires and different length wires..that is a text book example of how not to do it.
Makes the engine bay nice and neat but you fukt if a coil pack goes bad.
Taking a fender off, let alone paying someone to do it, makes the job 3x as hard, IMO not worth it.
I think I would use solid wires the whole way, not use extensions. That makes for 1 more thing to go wrong.
It said somewhere that there are 2 different lengths, and not to mix them up. Then it shows him hand crimping, with out the properly designed tool, which I think isn't a smart idea.
Otherwise, nothing wrong with thinking outside the box for the location, it's the other steps he takes I disagree with.
the blue areas would have clearance issues. I believe it is only a couple of inches there.
All this is more of a thought exercise for me right now. I would love to move them but I don't have the means to fabricate brackets and wire harness to move them to that location. I think Painless Wiring could help in that matter.
So if I were to do it but instead of using different lengths but ones that are all the same length and used the correct crimping tool(would rather just use longer wires vs. extensions though), it would work? I don't know what you guys think about it being mounted there but I think it's interesting at the least. Also I don't know what you would pay someone to take your fenders off, it's not that hard to do yourself. The 85 corvette I had, in order to replace the battery I had to take the drivers fender off. So in my opinion this isn't to far from that.
>dont relocate them to the batter area,,,Wire length needs to be keep to a minimum for obvious reasons,,,noise,,performance,,
>why relocate it at all....U did know that taking them off is easy if you do it and dont install all the bolts back that hold down the coil pack harness.
I have 3 bolts holding down my harness..3 on each side that is,,takes me 10 mins to remove the coil packs,,,and to remove the valve covers, intake full removal and install 1 hour unless I drop a wrench,,
I learned all this by trial and error when I had to do some valve masssaging
Leave them or use the available coil pack relocation kits that are out there,,IMHO
98's are different. Our coil packs are individual mounted.
