Hi I am new here but I have done a little research and I think I want to remove my maf screen. Just was curious to ask those of you who have how hard the screen is to pull out, and if you know any tricks?
Thanks in advance

IBTL...
I think it just pops off...I don't know, mine was off when I bought the car.
your the guinnea pig-let us know please
Leave it alone.....:)
so no one here on this fourm has done it, I have heard it can help a little and is a free mod. I checked my screen and it seems to have only stopped a few peices of grass, so i feel its not needed. I just dont want to start pulling on it and like half rip off or get bent and then not be able to get it all the way out. So Anyone who has done this please chime in
anyone done this?
Yah it has been done, our lids don't seal all that well so that is why people are hesistant to remove the maf screens, but here you go

Its been done about 250k times. Its probably better to leave it on though.
You can buy new maf ends that have no screen, incase you want to put the screen back on.
Leave it on. The first time I changed the filter I had a leaf in there. If it wasnt for the screen it would have been in the engine. :true:
it'll pop right out with a screw driver. just stick in on the edge and jank it out :D.... I've had no problems with my fipk2 from k&n and even on the '98 nothing has really gone in there and it just has the slp lid and the k&n filter.
sandman you really had a leaf in there?! :eeek:
if your looking for free mods, you should also do the throttle body bypass.
I'll second that. It's the way to go just in case you want to switch it back. Because chances are good that the screen will get a little boogered up when removing, and won't go back in properly.
We bought my wifes car with these ported and screenless MAF ends on the car already. Had to work on the MAF tables a bit to get it right, but seems to work fine otherwise.
I know this is considered one of the free mods, in my opinion it's really not a free mod,,,,because it requires tuning after the fact. But if you really don't want to spend the money on some ported/screenless ends,,,I'd just leave it alone.
Leave it on. Looks elsewhere for mods.
X2
The very little gain you well get from this is not worth running the risk of sucking in trash into the engine. Like Cutlass said look other places for mods.
Also when I had my car tuned at LS1 Speed Inc. they highly recommended leaving the screen in place due the trash issue and that the screen stabilizes the airflow across the MAF allowing it to get better and more accurate readings.
I ported and polished mine, along with the screen removal,so far so good
Leave... the MAF... alone!
there are 1.38 million cars on the road that dont have maf screens, GM deleted this screen 2002 LS 6:tv:
Ya I've heard that but just don't buy into it. Especially since GM removed the screen in the later years anyway.
No need to tune often though,,,once the MAF table is dialed in you leave it alone. It's not that big of deal really. Just a few logs and simple math and it's done.
If you take the screen out, make absolutely sure that the lid fits perfect with NO LEAKS. I used a drop light stuck up in the air box with the lights out to check for leaks and have had no problem so far, good luck.
I have never had a screen on any of my MAF's, long as it is tuned for and you have an air filter, you will have no issues!
My .02.... anyone is a retard for wanting to do this. it protects the sensor. that alone should be enough to convince you to just leave it there vs .00001 hp.
You may gain a little hp at wot ( probably because the ecm will still have to adjust to the slight difference in flow) at peak power but down low you will lose and in daily driving where throttle is opening and closing constantly and the screen helps keep turbulence at a minimum.
Spend money where its needed not stupid mods like this.
It's ridiculous anyway... A bolt-ons car (which are all of the guys that are OBSESSED WITH SCREWING WITH THEIR MAFs) MIGHT pickup 2 HP with the screen out AND tuning.
FACT: If you remove the screen, the reported airflow is lower making your car run leaner in OL and at WOT.
I have before and after logs with wideband data, would you care to put your money where your mouth is? :)
I have had 3 fbodyies within the last 8 yrs. All ported MAF No problems. Actually I just ported Mine yesterday and it has a deeper idle tone to it now. You just cant touch those little wires inside. Thats were the problem lies. Make sure it gets tuned and you will have no problems JMO.
