I started my H/C/I swap today at 1pm. It took longer than I wanted to get the motor out...oh well. I go back tomorrow at 1 to put another 8 hours of work into it.

Wow! Looks like its going well... I like the last shot with the wire harness all dangling from the engine bay. What H/C/I is going on?

The military base here has a garage with almost everything you can think of...air tools, lifts, SAE Certified mechanics as employees if you need help, etc...costs $2.50 an hour to use a lift.Quote:

Looks good so far. What method did you use to clean the top of the pistons without getting all that carbon wedged in between the cylinder and the piston? Or did you take it all apart?
Rotated the crank till two pistons where TDC and used a air powered gasket stripper on both the engine deck (where the head gasket material was) and the pistons (just rotated the crank a quarter turn till two more pistons were ready to be cleaned). I then took a shop rag and wiped all of the crud out of the cylinders when the pictons were at the bottom.Quote:

Cool, nice work on that. I dont see why not, if the green coolant you had in there was okay to use with all brands i dont think youd have a problem. When i replaced the stats on my cars, i just flushed the old coolant out but im sure we didnt get it all out. And ive been running the green stuff since then with no problems. But since its out of the car, theres no better time to try and get it all out if its possible.Quote:

Pull the plugs out of the block -- 17mm allen head plug above and behind where alternator sits and 5/16" allen head (may actually be metric, but this is what fit best) just above where the starter sits. Then flush it out with a hose like Joshie D said.

Got a few questions...
1. I thought I got all of the coolant out of the threads in the block where the head bolts go in, but apparently I didn't. When I was torqueing them down, some coolant misted out. After that the bolts went in fine (lock tite and all). Is this going to cause major problems down the road?
2. I was rushing when I was putting the heads on and when I first torqued the bolts to 22 ft/lbs, I did not go in the specified order on the driver's side head (I just went from right to left). I caught myself immediately and when I did the 90 degrees then an additional 90 degrees on the bolts, I did them in the right order. The passenger side head was done correctly from the start. Is the driver's side head going to have problems?
what is the benifit of solid motor mounts?
Headers/exhaust clearance issue fix, no rocking of the engine, less stress on the drivetrain when it loads/unloadsQuote:

Looks good! Its amazing how much quicker things get done when you have the right facilities and tools to do a job like this.

Day Five.
Got it in the car, with much adjusting of two jacks and the lift...it did not want to go back in. I still have some small things to do before I start her up. I have to hook up the grounds on the back on the driver's side head (forgot about them when I was reattaching the wires. I also have to fabricate some lines to hook up to my aftermarket rails. Lastly, I have to bleed the brakes and hook up my linelock (electrically).
I also ran into a problem. As you can see in the third picture, my throttle body is stuck open, maybe 25% or so. How would I go about fixing this? Will the TCS reset after it gets power back?

Looking good I did a very similar swap of this but I left my engine in the car. Same heads and cam but I did the 92 fast. Looks awesome good luck on start up :).

Shop was closed Monday and Tuesday.
Day Six:
Got the little things hooked up...bled the brakes, fabricated the fuel lines, Catch Can installed, and got the Hot Wire for my Racetronix Fuel Pump rewired to the alternator.
I thought I was ready to start her up, and when the fuel pump came on and primed the system, it leaked out of two small places where the sealant wasn't in the threads on the rails, so I had to take them appart, put more sealant on and wait till tomorrow for it to dry :roll:
I also have to bleed the clutch and drill a new hole in the throttle body so it will close.

IT'S ALIVE!!!
I started her up today and let her warm up so I could fill her up with coolant. She sounds freaking amazing, even untuned. I can't wait to get the computer tuned and running right.
I still have to figure out how to get the torque arm on. The bolts are wedged on the rear and I can't get the piece on or off (misalligned). I also can't drive her because they're touching (DS Loop). I've got 8 hours tomorrow to figure it out :rolleyes:
I'll post the video up tonight when I get home from work.
