Wanna see what a 12 bolt looks like exploded?

Well, My 12 bolt exploded. It was a long time thing that happend over time. Im pretty disappointed. Not mad, just disappointed. Im surprised it ran at all. These pictures are viewer discretion advised. View at your own risk. It may make you ill. Made me chuckle when a handful of crushed washers and bolts fell into my hand when I took my cover off. Dude, I dont have anymore money. Im trying to SAVE money. Ive spent thousands and thousands already. Im forced to try and re-build this 12 bolt. Buying a 9" just isnt in the question. Im trying to do other things in my life other then dump money into a car. Im pretty disappointed.

RWHP is appx numbers only, On a very rough tune. probably only 430. Similar torque.

Rebuild kit will probably be 500 bucks roughly.

I have a 3.42 10 bolt if you want it... a band aid if you will...

mr luos do me one huge favor dont recomend a locker and 35 spline axles on a daly driver.... way to much axle play not bad down the high way but in parking lots it sucks lol

The only reason this 12 bolt exploded is because those bolts backed out. Its not like I dead hooked the car fro ma 5500 RPM launch and blew the pinion in pieces. The whole reason its blew is because some worthless ass fuck didnt locitite these bolts. Blows my mind.
385 bucks for new ring/pinion/seals/bearings and relucter wheel.

Well. I kinda want to get a new DS also. At least a stock one that doesnt have the defects mine does. I found a Strange Steel stock length DS with 1350 U joints for 300 bucks. Also a stock aluminum DS for 200. Have yo look into these prices. I need to find me a sugar mamma

When Im driving the car, it is always hard. I have my 06 GP to pussy foot around in.

Hey, stuff breaks... If I had broke it at a 5500 RPM dump at the track.... well, I would have had to get towed home. That would not have been cool.

I like my 31 spline axles and TruTrac diff. :)

Works for me, and handles the power without problem.

Parts will be here Wednesday. Hopfully by next Monday I will be driving it again and going to get my DMH ecutout welded in. This has given me a chance to get some loose wiring together. Change my oil, its been hundred miles since cam install. I will get my 4.11 gear and get rid of that 3.73. That will be fun. Ecut out will be fun. Im trying to see the bright side here.

yeah, i got my I-5 Colorado (missing 3-cylinders) :lol: when im in the mood to go slow. however since i got the '95 TA up and running ive been driving the piss out of it because very soon it goes under the knife...

it's missing 3-cylinders as in it's not a v8 like my SS and TA...:D

Well, I am/was very close to pulling the trigger on a 9" from EPP. But, have been thinking. I cant find a ABS ring to save my life. Long story. But, heres what I am thinking.

I already have brand new 4.11's and pinion
Also have a new full rebuild kit.

But, I have tried and tried to find a new ABS ring for the carrier. Im thinking of just leaving it off, not pluging the sensor up and rebuilding the 12 bolt as is. That means, I would have no ABS (no big deal), also... the sensor is used for the LOW TRAC. Just to sense wheel spin. I do not have traction control. Can I leave this ring off and not run into problems? I really want a 9", but could really stand to save the cash... Im probably moving out of state shortly for a new job. Wouldnt hurt to have some spare change laying around.

Also, If anyone is looking for a 12 bolt housing and axles that are both in great shape, PM me.

Does that reluctor ring bolt on in between the ring gear and differential? if so, then leaving it out might give you some issues when setting up the gears.
If not then, a red ABS light and no ABS operation should be your only problems.

Yes, The ABS ring bolts (gets samwiched) between the posi/carrier housing and the ring gear. IF I was to try and re-use this rear end, I would just reuse this ABS ring after TIG welding and file fitting new teeth. Not having that ring in there would mean major problems with the set up for sure. :)

Im 90% sure im just buying a 9" tomorrow from EPP. Talked to the dude for a good 15 minutes today. Really cool dude. If anyone wants a great deal on a peffect 12 bolt housing and 30 spline axles's with C-Clip eliminators, PM me. The 12 bolt is going on Ebay tomorrow. I will probably post it on here also. I also have the Posi/carrier. I would not hesitate to use the carrier whatsoever. Just finding a ABS ring is difficult. My reasoning behind buying 9" is simply to be done with it. Its just money. Ill make more. :)

:) I could not bring myself to spend the extra cash on the M9. No way. I choose to not have ABS. M9 would be nice for the weight. But its way too expensive, even for my money happy spending ass. This 9" should complete the ass end. :)

Yep, the 12 bolt is a great rear end. But, I just wanted out of any troubles with my 6 speed and some stickey Mickey Thompsons. Plus, Im so sick of working on the car.... I did not want to set up that 12 bolt. Even though I have a complete rebuild kit and 4.11 gears at my house. I am seeing about returning them. Or if, someone wants to buy the 12 bolt... Nothing from what I can see. They charge the same. If you call Moser and ask for a 12 bolt, they will ask if your auto or manual. If manual, they will try to persuade you into getting the 9". Auto cars are almost always fine with a 12 bolt.

Also, My complete 12 bolt. Housing, axles, brand new gears, and posi would be perfectly fine to bolt up without ABS. I know, i know... Why didnt I just bolt it up with out ABS if I getting a 9" with no ABS... right?

Just because. I have the money.... and I want a M6 sectruity with a 9". Thats pretty much it. :)

I have been told over and over again I was 'near' foolish for buying a 9" from people around me(in person) when the work I had to do was minimal. People go 10's on the 12 bolt. It is a strong rear end. But for me, I see my car spending alot more time at the 1/4 mile strip this year then it does on the street. Its kinda sad to me, but its also what I want.

I need another 12 bolt housing and axles for our other 4th gen. That is providing it's a Strange housing. And of course if Crash doesn't want it.

fuck the rebuild...go to a junk yard and find a used 10 bolt and suck it up for a little bit...Cleveland pick a part has a cluster fuck of rear ends for as low as 250 dollars...don't know where in Michigan you are but to me it'd be worth the drive, they're south of the OH turnpike

Wouldn't that be like,,,,going backwards??? If not in a hurry to get the car on the street I don't see the point in shoving a 10 bolt in there for a short amount of time, only to pull it back out later. Thats alot of extra work.
Not to mention I wouldn't pay $250 for a used 10 bolt anything....Shucks I've had 10 bolt housings just given to me. Once used and abused they aren't worth much more than a door stop.:D

From looking at his damage in the pics,,,,it appears to me he simply had a few ring gear bolts back out. Not the fault of the 12 bolt at all and very cheap repair.
Probably new ring and pinion,,,a setup kit and thats about it. That will only set you back about $300 give or take. I'm sure the posi, and axles all survived just fine.

Ya you could shove a 10 bolt in there and get on the road,,,but with the power this car is making I wouldn't even think of it. I'd simply service the 12 bolt in the car and hit the road again.

I would like to hear the difference on the 3.73 going to 4.11, I might be saving for an s60, was thinking of going 4.11 as well.

Will let you know. I just got the 12 bolt out a few minutes ago. I wish my bearing were pressed on my damn axles. Thats BS.

This is besides the point by now. There are only a few points to this horrible string of bad luck I have encountered here.

When pulling the studs through the housing, is it absolutely necessary to RTV around the head of the bolt? Im now worried about it leaking past the bolts. Some say to do it, some dont mention it. Do I need to worry?

If you are talking about the studs in the center section that hold the third member on,,,,,I always use sealant on them.

Sealant on the threads or on the back of the stud?... in front of the head? Im trying to figure out if I have to wack these suckers back out or not. Or if I can just put some sealant on the threads.

Sealant on the threads when you bolt the third member on should do the trick. Ford originally had bronze washers that went on first (before the nut) to keep it from leaking. I've only seen them forsale at some of the mustang restoration vendors. They don't come in the ring and pinion setup kits for some reason :think: I never understood that. Getting cheap I guess.

Well, They shipped me what seemed to be bronze washers, along with lock washers. I suppose some form of sealant on the threads will do me fine. I DO NOT want a leak from something stupid tomorrow.

Sounds good, a dab of sealant, I work it into the threads with my fingers, and you will be golden.
Seems without it,,,the gear oil eventually will find it's way past the stud, and work through the threads and cause a little seapage,,,not necessarily a dripping leak,,,but it may look wet around the bolts after time.
