anybody remove the screen from the stock MAF. Is it a problem to do so
(it seems restrictive). ??
sorry, searched and found the answer. Leave it in !!!
Do it.
I took mine out. No problems at all
I did it on all 3 f-bodies I had.
De-screening the MAF is so hit or miss. IMO, the Cons far out weigh the Pro's. Look at it as how much HP you MAY gain from doing it. Then look at how much headache it may cause for a amount of HP that is so questionable. I have heard people (on here) say they actually 'felt' a HP increase from de-screening the MAF. I find it 100% impossible to actually 'feel' any HP increase from doing this. Leave your MAF alone. Look into other proven areas to gain HP.
I 100% agree with Hi-Po. Lets just say that you gained 5hp which is a far stretch. Then lets say a piece of debri (spell?) hits the MAF wires and wrecks it. Now your out around $300 for a damn sensor for a questionable gain. I ported mine but left the screen in for insurance. In my 76,000 miles I have seen one thing the screen stopped from entering the engine. Thats one thing I didn't have to worry about :D
Its hit or miss...
There is no right answer actually..
I swore by leaving it in and got pissed and popped it out.. Runs fine to me....
Thanks everyone, I am leaving it in for now.
BlackSS ... I ported & polished my TB, but how do you port the MAF ?
Thats totally not true. The MAF ends, you cut the metal out of them. Its actually quite simple. I don't really know if it helps that much, but it keeps you busy and may make a difference.

anything you "think" you feel from descreening the MAF is in your head. leave it in
I would just leave it in. They put it in there for a reason. And it can help, even though you wont know it till you look at it. When i bought my car i went to clean the air filter and noticed there was something in the ducting. I took it off and my MAF was packed with birdseed the a mouse must have put in there somehow. If i hadnt had the screen that wouldve been sucked down into my engine.
I am convinced, it stays in.
I am just wondering if there is a way to free up some more air flow. Has anyone had luck with the smooth bellows or possibly a larger diameter after market MAF.
No offense and I'm sorry, but this is one the dumbest comments I see on car forums. The EGR and AIR systems are put on our cars FOR A REASON, but 90% (the other 10% being CA residents or people wanting to keep everything stock and unmolested) of members on here remove them for various reasons.
The reason I took mine off is because I have the intake air filter there. That is supposed to stop anything from getting inside the engine. If the MAF was before the filter, then I could see leaving it on, but its not, so yeah...
Disclaimer: I'm not stating I gain any hp off of it...just weight reduction off of the front
I gotta agree. The corvette mafs dont have the screen. If you have something missing the filter or have a mouse packing stuff in there then you have OTHER issues..
Stock maf =great!
Descreened maf= ok to me. i did it.
Ported maf = tune it or go SD
Nah it totally is true. Porting the MAF RUINS it, so do the ported MAF ends. They make them inconsistent, non-repeatable in measurement and jack your fueling WAY out until you retune for them. A 40% change in fueling is insane, and that's what you can expect. Don't take my word for it though, look at this guy: http://www.ls1tech.com/forums/pcm-di...ar-dies-2.html Unhooks his 'ported' MAF and his trims go from +35 to +45% down to 4% in SD with the MAF unhooked. I junk about 1-2 MAFs a month for customers who have 'ported' them and now they won't run the same AFR twice in a row on the dyno to save their lives.
There is just not some big gain to be had by jacking the MAF around. I don't understand the high volume of threads that concern this. The MAF is a [once] calibrated sensor that is directly responsible for fuel delivery to the car. How can you 'port' a MAF and have any idea of it's impact without the software to log before and after and fix the AFR change that you cause when you mod them?
I'm with these guys (Sorry Preston, lol) I ported and descreened mine, and have not had one problem, and as camino said, you should not be getting shit into your MAF, thats a filter problem.... If you look at a stock MAF, screen blade and all, then a ported descreened one.... there is night and day difference, yea it may be only worth a few ponies, but to me its giving the engine every chance of flowing better... Some will also argue that it causes tuning problems, but i've seen that go both ways....
Thank you! Too many people are still swinging from the "Port your maf, Do ANYTHING to your MAF" tree. What is so hard about leaving the MAF alone? I dont think I will ever understand it. Im just going to start coping and pasting that response in every thread I see about MAF porting/screening.
Maybe you do, maybe you don't, maybe you don't know (because close loop operation covers it up)... do you have the before and after logs to support your argument? I can offer a pile of hard-data that says it's a problem. The logs in the link I posted in my previous post show and prove the same as well.
I'm all for going fast, especially on a budget. If this were worthwhile, I'd recommend it; I'd have no reason not to :)
Logs tell all.
I am going to have to post up some pics of my MAF... looks like Moe, Larry and Curly got their hands on it. I pulled the air box and MAF when I did my coolant, hose and belt change a few weeks ago and found that it has been de-screened, de-bladed, and carved on like a Thanksgiving turkey. It even has one or two holes hacked in it that are covered by the bellows. How the asswipe that managed this fine piece of modification managed not to break the wires is beyond me... The funny thing is the car runs great with no evidence of overfueling or other issues. Some people really should not own tools or attempt to use them!
The car doesn't have any other mods and by the quality of the work that was performed on our MAF the prior owner probably thinks a tune is what you do to a piano. Once you perform a tune is it "locked" in so that it can not be messed with, ie. with a handheld?
I should post pics of my MAF...it was debladed/descreened by the previous owner and was tuned when he got headers and a lid installed. Last fall, I decided to clean up the hack-job that was the deblading of the MAF by the previous owner. I took my dremel with a 120 grit sanding wheel on it and "ported" the ends smooth and polished it smooth with Mother Mag Polish. The ONLY reason I did this is because the previous owner had it tuned after he messed with it.
I will trade you...
Just buy a Granatelli and quit all this nonsense!
The before pics are on my dead desktop...here are the after pics.

Dam. MBA used to sell these.. I wonder if anyone had issues with them..
WOW freaking geniuses, just take out the damn MAF screen any body ever look at a book and read it can know that the screen is only there to straighten out the air, BUT since F-bodies and corvettes have a straight filter to intake it is no longer necessary, thats why in 2002 GM realized this and took it out of the Z06, just dont touch the wire's and you wont have a problem.
Laugh your ass off but im still right:blowme:
1) weird that you want me to blow you..
2) is a screened maf tuned to read/register the amount of air coming in..with or without the screen..the stock tune expects the screen to be there when reading from the maf..and adjusts accordingly.. as with the ls6 etc..the tune is expecting no screen and is tuned accordingly..taking off the screen dramatically changes the true amount of air that is entering the intake..so when the maf read how much air is coming in..the pcm takes into account the true amount based on a formula with the screen in place..since those little wires can in no way read all the air entering the intake at 1 moment..so you screw the reading of the true amount of air entering the intake and messes up your a/f . so i must politely retort "no :blowme:"
Wow -- I step away from my computer for a few hours and things got ugly! My question now is should I replace my hacked up MAF? If so, replace with a stock or aftermarket unit? I had asked Frost if a tune would have been "locked" in if done professionally as I can still write mods with my handheld.
go stock...the stock maf is a very good device...if your going big power though..then a SD would be best where it doesnt use the maf...but for driveability and on the fly recovery for DD cars stock maf is good
Thanks Shady!
i dont understand why someone would argue against facts...
Mine is descreened... i dont have a way to log it.. it runs ok... so i think... im cool with that on my stockish DD.
An analogy would like.. my greatgrandpa used to smoke and he died in his 90s of old age... my grandpa used to smoke and he died in his 60s of lung cancer..
Most of the time this mod will hurt you ... does that make it clearer for you guys??
Just removing the screen isn't the end of the world without tuning, and can certainly be tuned around... 'Porting' the MAF causes it to not be repeatable in measurement. This ruins it.
Yeah i would have to say by far this is the worst forum web site ever
so why would i want to post logs on here dont really know and hey Y2K Pewter SS fuck you and your infraction all of you blow me
:smileban:
Damn it preston, i wanted to push the ban button.... why couldnt you let me?
Wow, the guy gets a whole 7 posts outs and gets banned! Thats awesome!
we all can be asses... I cover a few, just not a new unrespectful punk @ss!
this site is cool, please leave us be.
This is the way the world ends
not with a bang but a wimper
 we :Owned: him good..and that is all he has to say ..hey f off preston  i think you should have let that fly
LMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sorry guys but banning me for a day is not getting "owned" you guys are horrible, and potting post's on a forum does not make them facts just to clarify that. Just because you have 5,000 posts does not make you smarter then another guy, just tells that you have no life, dont work on your car enough, and probably just a bum that ain't got a job and still living at home with mom. This is the third LS1 i've owned and there is a reason that I have never been on this site until now. and if you guys are cool with that, thats fine i guess so have fun taking people's opinions and sorting through the facts, when you could just look up some real facts and be done with all the trouble.
Wow, it's like you guys are poking at a caged rat just trying to piss him off even more! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
This thread turned into a pile of nothing.
it was nothing to begin with. a one post answer
I guess this one needs to be ended.
Alot of us also run aftermarket lids that dont fit exact like the stock ones did, something may get by cause of that. It only takes 1 piece of debris to take the MAF out of commission.
Mostly it sounds like a hit and miss kinda thing to me... Still more people say bad things about it than people say good things about it... Living out here in Nebraska with all the crap on the roads, year around, why would anyone take the chance, unless you are looking to make a replacement.
