My adventure today

So I just got the T/A back from my garage after they fixed my main seal leaking and installing my ARP Rod Bolts. That was Friday.

Fast forward to today. I go work...car drives great, I don't get on it, just cruise. At about 11am, me and a coworker decide to go to lunch. He's never ridden in my car, so we took it out for a spin. As I turn onto Rt. 1 North, I get on it...1st...2nd...3rd...as I shift into 4th and gun it again, I hear a loud bang and the car hops. I think I just hit a bump in the road and my car bottomed out. My coworker then yells at me and points out his window. What I see is fascinating...there what appears to be a round object bouncing next to my car (doing about 110-120mph at this point) in a trajectory that eventually takes it into a telephone pole. The telephone pole takes it pretty well, but it visibly shakes a good 6 inches or so. My coworker then says the word "pulley" mixed with a few other words. At the word "pulley" I immediately shut the car off and drift to the shoulder.

I get out, pop my hood and see this:

No belt and no crank pulley :sillyme:

So we go back to check out if that is indeed my crank pulley. We find it right by the telephone pole. Here is the pole:

So I call the shop and tell them what happened. They told me to bring it by and they'll take care of everything (they even payed for the towing). I trust this shop, and if they'll indeed pay for all damage, I'm not going to take it somewhere else.

I hope to god that the bolt just backed out (never found it) and didn't snap off in the crank. I highly doubt it did, since it was an ARP Crank Bolt. I'm also very lucky that nothing else was damaged under the hood, even my Lid to TB tube stayed together from a flying belt.

The fastener/washer that holds your tensioner pulley looks like its been used and abused.

Same thing happened to me when my belt kept comming off 2 yrs back. I was on the highway cruising at around 85 in 6th gear and all of a sudden I hear a warping kind of sound. I glance back and saw something fly out underneath my car and literally fly 20ft above the highway in my rear view. Then I notice the car felt very slugish and I was having a hard time just turning the wheel a few degrees just to switch lanes. Glance down and see my SES,Check Guages,check oil light all lit up and my coolant temp raising like my damn tach. Pull over and saw the same thing you did.

Damn, that's absolutely nuts, can't say I've ever seen that happen before. Just amazes me how fast stuff can go wrong with cars anytime and anywhere.

My first thought....
Crank was installed....snugged on with old bolt....and they forgot to install the new bolt.

Not that difficult to get that pulley on there, and have it not come off on its own. The latter being the more important part:)

Shop sounds like a piss poor place to me!

Also....

Check for ANY damage to the subframes and anything else under the car.
Charge the shop.
I bet they still have your ARP crank bolt sitting there.....

this.....I've read about people having their pulleys come off and it's ALWAYS installer error. I figure they did what Luos said or they just hit it with an impact and called it good to go. That ARP bolt gets torqued to 240 ft/lbs I believe.
That could've been a deadly error. That pulley hits someone and kills them and a witness says you were going 100mph+ guess where you are right now?

When I installed my pulley bolt when I did H/C, it was a super bitch to get it torqued down. We used a torque wrench and I fought with the damn thing. It will never come off tho :yup:

Yeah, considering the mark was about eye level it could have easily taken someone's head off.

That scrap is from when some guy changed lanes into my rear driverside quarter panel and pushed me into a curb on the front passenger side. He paid me $1500 cash for the damage. I just pocketed it and will probably put it towards getting the entire car resprayed.

I think it's just the lighting...it's the stock tensioner. I have a Katech one at my house, I just need to find it (got lost in the move).

I installed the pulley first and put the ARP bolt on. There was no stock bolt for them to touch.

I think either they didn't torque it down properly, or they just didn't install it at all.

I will be double checking the bolt when I go to pick it up. I will be taking my own torque wrench and doing it while the car is still on the lift.

I'm debating on if I'll be going back to them or not. I've been going to them for years and this is the first time they've messed up.

Have the shop KEY the pulley. Install the pulley, drill a hole between pulley and crank and install key THEN install/torque NEW bolt. I know your car isn't forced inducted, but I think the keying idea would help ya J. :yup:
