Seafoam

I just ran about half a bottle of seafoam in my '01 Z28. I checked the oil color several times...it changed gradually to a dark brown...and when I got close to a hundred and fifty miles (over a three day period) I changed the oil filter (Bosch Pemium) and let out about three quarts of oil/seafoam (synthetic RP) and replaced it with convential oil (Pennzoil High Mileage). I thought this would help supple any seals or rubber internals.I didn't drain out all of the treated synthetic because the oil was really dirty and I want to filter the oil with the new filter and keep cleaning the insides. I figure I'm going to keep watching the dipstick and then change everything again in about three more days. Does that sound like a good plan? My Z28 has over a 100K miles on it, but it runs strong and fast. Will I hurt the motor by leaving the diluted seafoam in a little while longer 'cause I think it needs a little more cleaning before I rinse fully.

No you wont hurt anything you havent already damaged under the scenario you described. In the future get away from solvents.

I would be remiss if I failed to say Royal Purple is one of the worst performing oils on the market.

Should I hadn't done it? Should I just drain it all now?

I forgot to add that I only had the RP in for about three weeks before I did this. I want to eventually get to Pennzoil Platinum 5-30. Do you like that better bossman/Sarge.

I dont care what anybody runs frankly. I just post the facts backed up with data so folks can make an informed decision. Seafoam is solvents. Solvents eat seals/gaskets and take awhile to get off the metal surfaces thus not allowing lubricants to properly lube.

How do I rinse the stuff out thoroughly, I don't want it in there if it is doing damage. I've heard good stuff about it. What about running it through the brake booster hose? I've read alot of conflicting opinions about it. I just want to clean my motor and see if she keeps running strong. If my car gets me about five thousand miles with no major issues I want to upgrade the top end. Anybody think I could have damaged somethng by using the seafoam?

Seafoam is a solvent. That is all we had back in the day. Today we have lanolin ester based cleaners that clean better and are "soft" cleaners versus "hard" cleaners like Seafoam. But Seafoam enjoys bunch of old guys saying it is the best because that is all we had in the day so folks still buy it today. AutoRX is a 3000 mile clean phase and a 3000 mile rinse phase. When you are done your motor is one clean sum bitch. But it slowly and totally dissolves carbon/coke/varnish and deposits it to your oil filter.
And no to keep the fueling system up to par I use 2 stroke TC-W3 at 500:1 mix.

I know a lot of people get good results from SeaFoam. Sure they do it is a harsh solvent. But there is better solutions than SeaFoam for sure that clean better and do no harm.
I would get me a SuperTech filter and SuperTech oil from WalMart and run that stuff about an hour driving around. Then drain and replace filter/oil with your favorite lubes.

How does the Sarge like Lucas oil additive?

When I Seafoam....

1/3 can in the oil a week before oil change.
1/3 can into the fuel.
1/3 can into the brake booster.

I change the oil (all of it) a week after I put in Seafoam. I also do the brake booster Seafoam before the oil change.



Sarge knows much more about the 'ingredients' of Seafoam, but as I understand it, it is a lubricant of some sort. Not arguing with him, as he is probably right and I am just rattling off shit I heard online.

SeaFoam is a solvent not a lubricant. Think paint thinner.
Listen up guys....Even SeaFoam themselves tells you not to run it over 100 miles in your motor oil for a reason!! It is eating the crap out of your internals and thinning your oil to a 10 weight.
Sure you "feel" a cleaner engine running smoother. Clean motor runs better. But I'll be damned if I am going to use solvents to clean my motor.
Long story short....here is about 40% of the ingredients of SeaFoam....
20-15% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, and 20-5% naptha (Coleman camp stove fuel).
Knock yourself out :)

By the way...the rest of it is just simple mineral oil. Think 10 weight baby oil.

Bout as much as getting my wisdom teeth removed with no pain killers. All it has is viscosity enhancers. Thickeners. That's it.
