fuel pump question

my car is not getting full acceleration the mechanics said it is the fuel pump but they want a lot of money to fix it. is this a hard job to do
and how can you tell if its the fuel pump or the filter that is causing this it only hessitates only when i hit the gas like from a start

The pump is not hard to replace. It sounds like it is the fuel filter that is gummed up. Best thing to do is replace the fuel filter and see what happens. If it continues then I would change the fuel pump.

If you have to replace the fuel pump the best way i know to do it is to pull back the carpet in the trunk and find the sheet metal right above the fuel tank.

Then remove the pump and get the new one put in.
Simple once you know what to do.
My friend had to do it in his car and once he had it cut it wasn't that big of a problem.

^^^Those measurements are not correct for later 4th gens. Let me find my pics and you can go from that. Those look like they are from a 3rd gen.

Here you go... Just be careful and not go too deep on the cut as there are lines and harness. You can see where they are. There may be a tool to remove the lock ring but I used a hammer and a chisel and it woked just fine. All it does is slide under the black tabs.

A Dremel and the quick lock metal cutting wheels.

Hook up the pressure gauge and see if you are getting 55-60 psi at WOT.

If you are then its not the fuel pump.

When is the last time you did a tuneup? Plugs wires pcv change maf cleaning etc?

i just got the car for cheap and it does need a tune up it was only at 20psi but i wanna know if is it the filter or pump im going to put the filter on first and see if it works better

how do you change the fuel pump without cutting anything

Drop the tank.

not fun to do either...

involves dropping the rear. easier to cut.

You don't have to drop the rear.

It may not have to come completely out but having it up high enough to get the tank out is a problem for some folks.

Yeah, just jack it high enough for the rear to drop on the suspension and be up in the air.

I'd drop the tank before I'd cut my car up. Just my opinion though.

Looks good but i think there are differences in the 4th gen between fuel pumps. My sending unit on my 98 has the extended lines, unlike the 2nd post where they just disconnect right there.
