The one wheel peel.
Hi guys, I have a question about the diff in my 95 TA. I'm starting to get the one wheel peel action going on. What style posi do I have, does it have clutches or cones in it? Is it rebuildable or do I have to get a new one? Thanks.

I would guess it's probably the auburn cone style unit. Thats what my 97 has as well. Once the cones wear into the case, it's pretty much a done deal. Auburn offers a rebuild service for these, but they are basically remachining the case and shimming the cones,,,and it's kind of a bandaid if you ask me. Better off picking up a new Eaton posi unit that uses clutches. They cost a little more up front but it will treat you good, and if or when the time comes for a rebuild, they can be disassembled and rebuilt at home with various kits available, so the extra cost upfront is well worth it in the long run,,,that is if you plan on keeping the car. Hope that helps. Larry.

I am pretty sure it is an Auburn. You would have to buy a new one unit.
Here is a link to there exhange program.http://www.auburngear.com/aftermarket/drex/
IMO I personally like the Torsen differential. Allthough, its cheaper to replace your Auburn.Last edited by 9t8z28; 02-08-2007 at 09:36 AM.

Thanks for the info. I'd like to upgrade to a better unit but money is tight right now. The stocker lasted for 123K so if a rebuild lasts close to that I'd be happy. I only put about 4-5k miles on it a year. The only way I could afford to get a torsen is if someone was selling a used one cheap.

Just checked on that rebuild exchange program and it's only good if the diff is less then 4 years old. So back to square one.

Thanks 9T8. I emailed him and I'am waiting for a reply. I hope it's the right series for my 2.73 gear. I wouldn't mind stepping up to some middle 3's though if it's not.

Cracked cone
Thanks for all the info so far. I took the rearend apart last night and found the problem. One of the cones has a nice crack in it, other than that it looked good. Glad I took it apart instead of driving it and having it fly apart and locking up the rear.
I missed out on the diff for sale that was posted about above, someone beat me sending the money. I'm still on the hunt for a rear diff and 3.42 gears. I just can't bring myself to put the 2.73's back in it. Has anyone used summit brand gears? I'm wondering how good they would be for $139.

I have a 98 T/A that had 2.73 gears. I changed them out for a Torson and 3.42's and LOVE the change; no more one-wheel peel. I autocross mine, so the one-wheel deal was killing my times. The Torson and the new gears eliminated that.

Hey Steve, I see you are from Arizona. Shoot me a pm sometime. We plan on moving there in the near future,,,and I always like to talk to fellow Arizonians. Cheers. Larry.

UPDATE....
I got my new diff and gears in finally. I did all the work myself at home and it wasn't as complicated as I expected it to be. I used all the stock shims and the gear pattern and backlash were spot on the mark. I really wasn't expecting that with a new posi unit, new bearings and used OEM gears that I bought from a member here. I don't even have any hint of gear noise. Yeah I know it doesn't normally turn out that way but luck was on my side for a change.
The change from 2.73 to 3.42 is nothing short of amazing, it feels like a whole different car.
