what can you afford?? with poll
welp, the short of it is i had to take an alcohol awareness class because i got an m.i.p. in austin last year while at ACL.
in this class, the instructor asked about how much we all thought it costs in a week just to get intoxicated, and then when we came up with the figure he wanted to know:
1. our initial reaction
2. do we continue this practice or change it
3. what else could we better spend this money on
now its a far stretch because if anyone has been to these weekend classes they act as if you are an alcoholic or a heroin fiend, but nonetheless it got me wondering....
i dont really drink, but i usually spend about 50 bucks on mary jane a week. this of course is an average, im back in college and that figure is lower then and much higher in the off season (so to speak). im an athlete and am pretty active but i just like to smoke pot recreationally and never have taken it seriously like alot of people i know.
well heres the numbers:
$50 x 52 weeks a year = $2600.
you can see how incredibly much that is, just on some light marijuana smoking, not to mention beer and other shit i really could do without.
all in all i could easily have my car completely (or mostly) if i cut out this kind of partying.
so i was interested to know what everyone spends their money on that they could really do without, and with all that cash saved, what would you do with it.
all ages here, though i think those around my age will really feel the effects of all those "man was i fugged up last night!" nights. it aint worth the money....
lets hear it...

Much as I would like to spend the extra cash left over each month on car mods I end up spending it on the house. Something always needs fixing/improving. House mods are WAY more $$$ than car mods, and sometimes they're not mods but required fixes. Like last week: almost $400 on a new pool cleaner (Hayward Ultra Vac) cuz the Creepy Crawly up and died. Whatever is left over goes into the car. This weekend she gets a stall converter, but it'll be several months before I can afford anything else.

i can only partially relate to that because im usually the one doing the home improvement because my dad foots the bill for our house. but i totally agree and i feel for ya brother.
right now we are redrywalling, sanding, and painting multiple rooms. i like to do these things, but i like them better when you sort of decide you WANT to do them, not HAVE to do them....
keep it coming people....

Most of my money goes to apartment/living expenses, some is saved for a house, and the rest is going out/drinking.

I'm at college and I can't get a job until I get my car, which will be in about two weeks. I didn't have a job all summer, so my bank account is dwindling, right now all I really buy is sometimes and extra meal, or buy-in for a poker game, which I gave up after a loss last week until I get a job.
When I get a job, I'll probably be spending it on gambling, going out with friends, partying, and some clothes (no metro) because I'm a sophomore in college and I'm still wearing the same stuff I did in high school.

It surely does. This year so far it's been the driveway and side parking repavement as well as desert landscaping in the front yard. Last year it was a new roof. The year before it was 400 linear feet of block wall fence. The year before that it was carpet/tile/paint on the inside. Next year..... Maybe the bathrooms or the kitchen. I've also got an improvement to an existing addition that I want to pull off. It will increase the Master bedroom by 180 sq ft and give me access to the pool from that room (3 steps away - Oh yeah....). Every year it's something else. I don't mind though cuz I'm doing it the way I want it to be.
