Ford Rearend Swap questions
I know very little just buying my first Trans Am have lusted after them for 10 + years now. I know the rear is weak and the 2 strongest replacements are a Dana 60 and a ford 9" /8:8.
What all needs replaced? will one from a mustang work. how much HP will a stock ford rear end take?
Thanks for the info I appreciate it!

I have a Moser 9" with a Strange pro nodular Third member with a detroit locker and 35 splined axles. Should hold up to 800 hp. I won't come near that but in any case they are strong.
You are looking at between $2100-2800 depending on options with a 9", and $2500-3300 with a Strange S-60. With the s-60 you will need to shorten your driveshaft or buy a new one. It is pretty much a direct bolt in application in both cases and not too bad of an install.
With the uniqueness of the f-body torque arm mount, It is very difficult to Fabricate a 9" houseing to work properly. It can be done but ends up costing more, looking like shit and turns out to be a big headache. If you want to try and go with a budget build, It would be best to buy a Houseing and Axle package from Moser, then trying to build a thirdmember with parts pieced together through e-bay. I have herd of guys building a pretty decent thirdmember set up for around $800. So if you are really ambitious you could get away with a 9" for around $1900 doing it all yourself and pieceing it together yourself.
Whatever your plans are, Do not build or put gears in the 10 bolt, it's a huge waste of money and if you plan on moding your car and raceing it with sticky tires its not a matter of "If it will break, Its when it will break"Last edited by Jays00ss; 03-01-2008 at 06:32 AM.
