A big warning about Dex-Cool

the problem theyre having on the Grand-Ams and such are more likely the crappy gaskets they use on the lower intake. Theyre captured o-ring style. The plastic gets hard and splits and the rubber gasket seal cant really take it and it blows out, usually either end of the head. dex-cool IMO is a bit finniky. it tends to glob up, get flaky and plug things up a bit easier than the green. That anycolorcoolant stuff is probably the best way to go. Use a bit of flush and get all the old dex cool out of there and put that stuff in and you should be good to go.

right now im doing a little science project with dex-cool. i took some from my radiator and dripped it all over a peice of aluminum foil (not the non-stick type, thats coated with silicone i believe)...i wanna see if i can see any signs of aluminum corrosion from it. nothing yet, but i just set it up.

it doesnt happen instantly. the stuff has to degrade for awhile before it gets nasty. the best thing to do would be to get some out of a car thats had it for a couple years

come to think of it, i used dex-cool in my cavalier for some number of years (dont worry its gone now) and i went through 3 head gaskets and 3 defferent engines due to cooling issues.

Dex-cool is only good for 30,000 miles and thats is it. Every mechanic that i have givin any respect to has always told me that. As long as you change it and have it flushed on time everything usually fine. I have always used it and will continue.

Kerkorian cashed out $252 MILLION worth of stock 2 days ago...coinciding w/ The General's lowest value in over 20 years!! His investment company made out huge this year and he sold off ailing stocks to get a tax break, now in Feb. he can buy them back at a lower rate, and get a tax credit, as well as profit from the drop in the value. I dont agree with what hes doing because he's basically making all the shareholders suffer so he can get a tax break, which is total b.s.

As for the 2006 thing; last time I checked the dealer showroom, unless its one of their rebadged daewoo's the coolent was still orange.

Now if shares drop when he sells and he is expected to buy in early February, wouldnt it make sens to buy some this month while they are still down? then when they go up next month you can get that coolent flush you been savin up for.

i work in antarctica. we use a 60/40 mix 60% coolant 40% water. we use catepillar e.l.c.(extended life coolant)ethelyne glycol. it is red in color. we also use block heaters to keep everything from freezing.in the winter time it can get to be -50* at times or even colder and i do not see the antifreeze freeze, even if it wasn't plugged in. we use this coolant in everything we run down here. we use a ford truck and van fleet. 5.4liter, 1999,2000,2002 vehicles. the only problems i see in a period of time is the block heater goes bad.and these vehicles are pretty much at idle 7/8 of the time to stay warm,if your working outside. these vehicles are WORKED HARD every day.

I lived in Fairbanks, AK. for 4 years, and parked my '85 TPI outside because Wifee had the one car garage. My car was plugged-in(block heater, pan heater, and battery blanket) at all times. 60/40 split worked fine. Everyone has two sets of keys on them in the winter-go to the store, leave the car running and lock her up while your gone. You'd be amazed at what rubber, plastic, and leather does at 55 below. If the generic stuff can handle it, I'd bet my life on the extended life formulas.

I have a New system, vatted block new heads new rad. Do I go to Dexcool or something else. Sorry to resurrect this but I have seen a set of 5.3 heads destroyed by Dexcool, granted I don't have a clue what the previous owner did...

Only time I've seen an issue is when someone mixes in something else besides Dexcool.

Last summer I spent a wonderful time doing 30 flushes on a 2000 Firebird I picked up because the previous owner or shop mixed non Dexcool.

Had a nice black foam coming from the radiator and shit brown color coolant for about 26 flushes. I even used 2 full bottles of cleaner to get it clean.


So much fun At least I only paid $425 for the car.

an you switch to the regular anti-freeze or is it harmful in some way to use regular coolant in any motor with Dex-cool?
