If you are track running you will be using the "KD" which stands for (killer dry) on the street or rainy track you would run the "KDW" (dry and wet-get it?)around my neck of the woods you need the" KDWS" (dry wet and snow). These all have very different tread patterns which as one would imagine would have a big effect on traction in the various types of weather and pavement conditions.I doubt they use the same compounds for all these tires as they are meant for vastly different uses. There is a comprehensive tire test in the last Road and Track issue that is very informative if anyone is interested.

Over all I'm pleased with my KDW's. Had them on 3 months now. Don't have near the grip my potenza tires had in the rain. KDW's are superior in the curves and dry traction.

Tread compound doesn't do much to prevent hydro-planing, that's where tread pattern comes in.

That's pretty good. I'm hoping that I can manage that many miles out of mine. How is your driving habits? Cause I can't resist getting on it every once in a while.

I just bought 295/35/18 KDW II's I'm not sure what is different between these and the previous version, but they do work good in the rain. That's all it does here in Seattle!! So far so good! And as far as the magazine tests, they like what ever they get free and testing a rice burner? what ever.

I take corners pretty hard, but I do not take it to the strip. Nor do I do a lot of burnouts. I probably had another 5k miles left on them, but I had a nail in one and I did not trust a patch.

Having said this, I am sure they do not come close to the traction of a Nitto 555R, but they are sufficient for me. I took some hard corners and they never broke loose. Plus, I have the stock rear end so I dont want anything that will grab too hard.

KDW-S here...LUV 'em! The place that installed them DID have fun getting the beads to seat on the rims though!
