    Computer guru's inside..

my last laptop died and i have the HD in an external HD case. Some files say i don't have permission to open like old dyno runs, birthday pic folders, old power points. I get Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might not have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct.
Another is something about checking permissions. The HD is a xp but I'm using Vista. Isn't there a blanket fix for this instead of monkeyin around with each seperate file ?

There are only about 3 people on this site who are computer guru's. I haven't seen any of them posting lately. Might want to try an actual computer forum if you can't find your answer using Google.

    Regardless, free bump.

Sounds like you need to take ownership of the files.
Right mouse click on the parent folder which should be users. Then permissions and then owner.
