Understanding Dyno Numbers - Real Wheel Horsepower

Can dyno operators intentionally skew horsepower numbers to trick customers? We dig deep to find out.Mention a dyno test around a group of enthusiasts and you're almost guaranteed to start an argument. Regardless of the numbers or the shop, you will have people on both sides of the fence, some arguing that the dyno graph in question "reads way low, there must be something wrong" or that "the numbers are way too high, there must some foul play or trickery involved." For whatever reason, dyno numbers are often scrutinized with the same skeptical eye usually reserved for fine print at the used car lot, emails from Nigerian bankers looking to have you hold their money or photos of the moon landing.

Dyno numbers are different from Dyno to Dyno. Meaning that some manufactures have theirs calibrated different. So a Mustang Dyno is more conservative than a Dyno Jet. It doesn't mean that the car wasn't tuned correctly. It just means that tuner used the same parameters and goals of power gain to help the car reach its max tune. That tune may have more hp numbers on one dyno and less on another, or vise verse. That's were a lot of confusion comes from. Some people get their car tuned on a Dyno Jet and then go to a Mustang Dyno, for a Dyno Day, and barely loose to another person with similar numbers, and theirs is suddenly 20 hp less than their tune said. And the hurt feelings start because they think the dyno was wrong or the operator helped a friend out. That is not the case.
It's a nice surprise when you have a higher hp than your tune. It doesn't mean that you got hp out of thin air.
It's gotta be fast and sexy.
