I want to take the plunge

I want to look into getting a cam. I know little about them apart from a chart I have, and what the lsa means. I have an 01 ws6 with 103,000 miles on the car. I've got headers, and the other normal bolt-ons. I want to know what the most powerful cam I can put into the car without sacrificing much mileage. It's my daily driver, and I drive about 48 miles round trip to work every day. Here's a few things I want to put on the table..

    1. Drivability- I still want to get 20 something mpg

    2. Future mods- I'll eventually be putting either stock 243 heads on, or ported 243 heads on, as well as maybe an intake down the line.

    3. I want to put the most pwerful cam into the car i can without having to do major supporting mods. I know changing out the springs, pushrods are normal, but I dont want to have to put anything bigger in like different fuel or oil pumps.

    4. Id want to get something in the 228, or 230 range, with i think either a 110 or 112 lsa...i want something that'll lope well, but not sound like im gonna stall out everytime im at a light.

So, take me to school fellas...

224R 228R cam. amazing streatability cam with very little drop in gas mileage or wear on the motor! you WILL NOT be disapointed!

listen to the 224-228 cams they have great sounds too them without sounding like a top fuel car or anything. i put te 224R cam on a 112 in my dads GTO and it has a great lope too it that gets everybodies attention and makes amazing power low end and mid range. you dont need to spin your DD motor faster than 6600. and those cams power band are from idle pretty much to 6400-6600

gears and stall would go along great with the setup(stall if you are auto)

i have installed plenty of these cams and NO ONE has been disapointed with it.

someone told me that the higher one number, the higher the torque, less hp. is this true? im trying to learn what each of the numbers mean. I know the 230 and up is pretty extreme for a cam

the first numbers are the duration on the cam (how long the valve stays open to suck air in and then exhaust it. 224. 226. (first is how long the valve is open to intake air. and that secon number is how long it stays open to exhaust ! and the second numbers are how far the valve opens based on a 1" scale
    566. 568. means the valve opens a little more than half an inch on intake and exhaust. i know im forgetting some details but for me its late and im tired lol im sure 480924 people will chime in with there opinions about bigger cams being better.

and quick reference: bigger cams have less torque and more top end power (meaning the motor spins faster and farther up in the RPM range) like a 224R cam compared to a MS4 would be. 224R RPM range is from 2200 or something like that to 6400-6600 and the MS4 i havent looked up the specs but its huge and that kind of power band would be something like 4500-7600? someone else will tell you the correct power band but you get the idear. so you wouldnt ever really use that kind of power for your DD

I would put in the proven time and time again 228R with 112LSA. You can't go wrong with this one. many satisfied folks run this cam with great results. Good drivability. Nice lope. Nice power and torque curve throughout the powerband without having to constantly spin the motor to 6500+ rpm.

I would suggest a comp cam 228/232 XER lobes.
This is what I have ↑↑↑↑ the reason I chose this cam is because I have PTV issues and this is what the guy that worked on my heads and checked my PTV clearance suggested.

There are several post on the internet with this cam and it has a nice long torque line. Even with 241 heads and LS6 intake.

I'm still waiting on (Damian) to finish my tune.

We have installed alot of the LG G5X series cams with great sucess. I would suggest one of them for a nice package for the street.

Let me know and I will help with the pricing..
