school me on AR's
Im ready for another gun and ive been wanting to build a AR 15 for a while now, ive got pistols and shotguns but AR's are new to me so ive got some learning to do, i want it to be as accurate as possible at long distances, any advice on what parts to use, best caliber, what scope, or anything else i should know, thanks for any input

define long distances. 300, 500, 1000 yards?
whats nice about the ar is the lower reciever is the entire gun as far as the ATF is concerned. two little pins slide out and you can attach a different upper in about 30 seconds. the uppers (with the barrel) can be mailed to your doorstep with no FFL. therefore, you can have one lower and a 16inch, 18 inch, 24 inch barrel, the same lower can snap on a 9mm upper and shoot pistol rounds. probably cant go wrong with a 20 inch barrel. If I was you, I would skip the trial and error period where you shoot things with the standard .223 round , think "god this is a faggot round" and just save up for an AR-10 which shoots the manly, more devastating, and more accurate .308

1000 yards with an AR .223 is a pipe dream.....
.308 minimum...
You should be looking into bolt actions for 1000 yard shots.Last edited by Sarge; 12-28-2009 at 09:38 AM.

roger that .223 is a politically correct(geneva conventions bullshit that the united states is the only ones that follows it) round for wounding at 300 meters even sometimes closer than that. I would go the 308 round long distance shooting alot of power and it is one of the best rounds out their. Plus I just dont like a gas return system on it, I would rather have a piston driven weapon if you want your money to go a longer ways and less to maintain the weapon, cause if you put 50 rounds threw that things its like you put 1000 threw a saw or 240B which is piston operated way easier to clean.

yea ive had a few people tell me bolt action is the way to go but i really have no desire to have a bolt action gun, i really just want a semi auto that can shoot some good distance, if 1000 yards is unrealistic i can live with that but i would like to be able to get somewhat close to that
and like i said this is a whole new ball game to me, ive got plenty of experience with shotguns and pistols, but absolutely none with rifles so ive got alot of research to do, and all of your guys advice is appreciated

To tell you the truth I dont know why you would want a ar-15 to shoot that far but it can be done. If I was going long range shooting as for 1000 yards I would go with a .308 with an external magazine, or a 338 lapua with an external magazine. It is just because a bolt action is more accurate and more reliable when it comes down to actually shooting cause as long as you know you recharged that weapon and their is a round in the chamber it wont jam and can be fired in harsh climates.

Think of it like pistols which is more reliable a revolver because their is less moving parts in a revolver than their is in a semi auto pistol.

This all day long. Remy 700 MLR in .338, can usually be had for ~$1500 and add a Leuy Mark 4 w/ Badger base/rings. A bad ass rifle for around $2500 that has a shit load of power. The cost of ammo might kill ya though.
I love me some ARs but 1000yd guns they are not. A SR-25 would be the best choice for that kind of range but I'd rather have a bolt gun.

Thats not a bad group if your at a consistent fire, zeroing that weapon then it would have been much tighter, plus I am one of the guys that takes pride in their shooting and usually get no less the 36 out of 40 targets when qualifying.
