bad oil leak

Ok so while I had the car in the air (installed headers and tsp x pipes) I noticed a heavy oil leak around the top of the filter and its not coming from the sending unit or anywhere above the filter housing. I did start to remove the pan a while back to replace the gasket, only a minor leak then, before I realized I would need an engine hoist.

The leak only happes when the engine starts to warm up then it becomes a steady drip.

Oh yeah I also replaced the rear main seal not to long ago and already checked for an old gasket on the filter pad

clean it up real good and take it for a short drive then get back under it.....it almost sounds like you already think it's that pan gasket. If you're sure it's not the rear main then I would look at 2 other things besides the pan......the valve cover and the oil pressure sending unit which is right behind the intake on the drivers side. Most likely though if that sender is leaking your oil pressure would be reading inaccurate I would think.

already checked sending unit no oil around it. and the valve covers are clean just replaced the rockers

The cam position sensor has a seal and will leak bad if it fails. It's located at the back of the motor next to the oil pressure sensor.

sorry to step into the post: Hey Cutlass i was wondering about number 16 and 17 in the diagram, What's the name of that part? and what is it for? My car has an oil leak around the pan. I tight down the bolts about a 1/4 turn. The bolts were pretty loose. I'm checking this week to see if is still leaking. Thanks.

Thats where the oil cooler lines hook up on a truck. Its a high pressure area so a leak isn't out of the question. I don't know the exact names but I'd call it a oil cooler cover or oil cooler adapter cover and gasket.

Thank you. Mine is still leaking after a few days running. I need to replace the oil pan gasket but it looks like I have to lift the engine. I don't see me been able to do that without a hoist. Oh well i guess I'll just have to keep an eye on the oil level until more cash steps in.

i tightend that cover cuz i thought it was leakin.......did not make a difference for me

I agree. Keep a quart of oil with you until money allows and you can either A-repair the leak yourself or B-have a shop take care of things for you.

Its called the oil cooler block off plate. The part number I came up with is 12553210 for the gasket

I just got back under the car and noticed the long bolt at the back of oil pan on the drivers side was loose and it would not tighten. I switched the bolt with the one on the other side and it wouldnt go past hand tight either so it seems to be stripped in the block but Im not sure if that one bolt only being hand tight could cause such a leak.

If there is pressure behind that bolt, it will leak. Have you tried a shorter/thicker bolt to see if it will thread into the block?

not yet Im having a hard time finding a metric bolt long enough
