160 Degree Thermostat
Does anyone know why a 160* thermostat from SLP is not legal in pollution controlled vehicles?
I would have guessed that a cooler running engine is more efficient and thus has less emissions. Hell, that's just a guess! But it sounds good to me!
So anyway, this has been bugging me. Anyone know for sure?

Actually, the colder the engine runs, it will have more emmissions. But it makes more power so go for it.

Love to BUT...
California emissions is a Byo@tch! I want the car to be legal and powerful. I know, I know...you can't have your cake and eat it too!
Well, dammit...I am hungry and I have it, so I'm Eatin'!
I guess I'll have to pass on the thermostat mod for now.

you really think they will ask if your thermo is stock or take it out to check. i think the cops have better fish to fry. plus do you think the inspection guy will even look for that. i say put it on!

It won't be detected on the sniffer test? If it would still pass the visual and sniffer, I'll put it on. I've also heard that it is harder for the car to get to operating temp with a 160* thermostat...any thoughts?
Would it cause premature wear or damage to the engine? We spend a lot of money modding our rides so I don't want a small oversight to shorten the engine life. Replacement or rebuild of LS1 motors are not cheap.

the thermostat is nothing more than a door. it opens up at 160*, but doesn't mean the motor will stay 160*. the next dependant factor is fan operation. if you have the fans set for the factory 225*, the motor will still go to 225*, unless the vehicle is moving. so, come emissions check time, just set the fans to 225*, so the motor will have better emissions readings. once you pass, then go back and set the fans back to 170*.

Forgive me...
But how do you reset the fans?? I know about the thermostat swap but I am ignorant of the fan reset thing. Could you please elaborate??
I thought you just straight swap the stock thermostat and voila...extra hp. Do you have to do something to the fans too?? How does it affect emissions.
Sorry for the questions but I just don't know. Thanks for your response..

you have to edit the programing via a handheld tuner or full editing software like hptuners.
just swapping the t-stat doesn't make instant hp.

I think the Ls1 is meant to run between 200-210 degrees F, and with propper tunning a 160 thermostat will basically keep you in the mid 180's, so i don't know if the 160's are such a good idea. I was just about to buy one too until i did some research and i think i believe those claming that the ls1 was meant to perform 200-210.

I have had a 160 for three+ years. I do have my fans also set using EFILive.

I have a 160 in mine as well. Keep in mind the LS1 thermostat won't operate at 160 after modified though. It actually opens around 168-170 degrees is more accurate.
You can simply modify your original thermostat with a 1/8 inch furrel, no need to buy the thermostat, what you buy will be modified in the same manor anyway.
You can't make the thermostat operate any cooler because it will not completely close if you do.
So to be accurate, these are not 160 thermostats that are being sold, they are more like 170's.
After logging mine on the laptop, it only starts to open around the 168-170 mark, but doesn't fully open until about 176 degrees. Thats where the motor stays if it's cold enough outside. On warmer days it runs around 180 and no more than 182 (where I have the fans come on)
Keep in mind there is more benifit to cooler thermostats than just a cooler engine and a few more ponies,,,,Running an auto trans? The trans is also cooled by the radiator, and if you keep the engine cooler and the fans running sooner, the trans temp also stays down, and if you have an SS or WS6 with a power steering cooler then this as well will stay cooler. Another benifit is heat soak,,,everything under the hood stays that much cooler, it helps with IAT temps and is also much easier on all the rubber parts, belts, hoses etc....Just some things to think about. Larry.

How does it effect fuel economy is my question... not that it matters a huge amount. but I'm just curious.

I still get the same amount of mileage I always got when I changed the thermostat. As a matter of fact it's starting to improve slightly now that I am playing with timing and fuel curves.

I was thinking it is a 195 but not 100% on that. The one I pulled out of the Goat was a 195* when I put the Mazier waterpump.

yeah, that's it. 195* you are correct.

Correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't the temp sensor need to see 180ish to see that the eng is warmed up so it will go into closed loop?
