Want to get a LS1 but have a question about MPG
Hey, im shawn, im 19 years old and i have a question. All my life ive wanted a muscle car so bad, i want to get one before im on my own and have big bills to pay lol. Ive heard good things about the MPG on LS1's but i wanted some first hand experience. This car is going to be my daily driver so i need fair MPG. I leave for work early in the AM so there are NO cars, i rarely ever have to stop so the stop-and-go is very limted. If i take it easy on the car and such, what kind of MPG can i expect? Your probably saying (why not just get some econobox if you want good MPG), well i also want a car that i can have alot of fun with on weekends, or down at the strip, i REALLY dont want some hybrid shit lol. On say a stock 00' Camaro, what kind of MPG could i get? What could i do to improve this? How much does it usually run you per week in gas on your car(this question is directed to any of you whos car is mostly stock(in other words doesn't use more gas than if it was stock))? Thanks again for any help.
Shawn

My Better Half drives a vette LS2 6.0 to work and back daily, stop & go traffic and still averages around 18-19 mpg ! Highway cruising is great, if I'm not pushing the pedal !!!

My T/A gets between 22-26 Mpg depending on my right foot. runs about $35 a week to feel up on 93 octane for 2.97 per gal, thats from a quarter tank I never let it get below that I usually average about 250 miles from full to a quarter tank

I haven't checked my city MPG lately, but I just got back from a drive to the Smoky Mountains and back.....................my best last summer was 2 tanks on the highway driving between 70 and 80 MPH.....got from 25.6 to 27.1. Now, this recent trip I checked again after the LT headers and ORY, drove similarly and gas on two tanks was 27.6 and 28.1. So, headers did help me. This was partially with AC on on both trips. I suppose in stop and go city driving I am about 16-18. It does depend massively on the right foot!

bullet do u have an a4? i know transmissions wouldnt affect mpg by 10 mpg, but it really seems like the m6 guys get WAYY better gas mileage.
i think i might need to learn to drive stick before i go car shopping...

Well, I did have a '98 AT with the 2.73 rear gear, and I got similar MPG. Many times I reached 27 MPG on the highway with that car, but now I have what I really want, a 6 speed. MUCH more fun to drive!

Highway mileage is pretty good with these cars, even when modded you'll typically get better than 20+ mpg if you drive reasonably. City driving is another story. I rarely get better than 13-14, but then again I lead foot it all the time.
To be honest with you this is much better than my 67 BB car: 454/TH400/4.10 12-bolt = 6mpg city and a whopping 8mpg hiway at 55 (3000 rpm). You can use this as a comparision of "The good old days".
These cars are like the old saying: "If you can't stand the heat then get outta the kitchen".
Typically, drivers of these kind of cars (V8 types anyway) are less worried about the gas mileage than they are about how much power they make and how fast they go. At least that is the case with me.
So, it stands to reason: "If you're worried about the gas mileage then don't buy the car!"

read his first post. i think your last quote is wrong... hes not buying the car FOR the gas mileage... hes buying the car cuz he wants the car. but of course, with gas prices going up, everyone wants to get the best mpg with what they have, otherwise ppl would go WOT everywhere.

There isn't anything wrong with that. It's just that one doesn't really come with the other in the sense that (at least with me) the more I mod the car the faster I want to go and the worse the mileage gets. It's a vicious circle. Which is why I have another car as a DD.

Thanks for all the quick responces, my drive to and from work is in very light traffic, to work (like i said) the roads are empty, ive seriously only stopped at a red light about 5 times in the last year on my way to work, its all greens from my house to work Going home is easy too, get on the highway and im home fast. The only reason im mildly worried about MPG is cuz i dont make ALOT of money, i am only 19 after all, but i figure if i dont get the car of my dreams NOW while im young, ill never be able too lol. I doubt that gas prices will go down much if at all , and once im married and stuff ill have alot more bills to pay.

Believe me, if i wasn't 19 and on a limited budget, i wouldn't care about MPG either lol. Id love to have a Camaro modded to hell and getting 8mpg AND another DD, but i just cant afford the insurance on both otherwise i would in a heart beat. Hell being 19, im sure the insurance on a camaro wont be exactly easy on the wallet as is lol.
