Pennzoil Platnuim swap????
I know this is probably a simply question but I don't want to screw up. I've used dino oil for all of my adult life in my muscle cars and grocery go-getters. Always been Havoline of some weight or another. After a lot of reading (much of it on Bob's site) and researching viscosity I am ready to make the jump to synthetic and giving it a try.
As you guys know I just bought a 2000 FB and I have no idea what the guy before me used for oil. The only thing on the oil change sticker is Mobil. That's it. So it could be on dino or synthetic.
I just bought 6 qts of Pennzoil Platinum 10w30 and a Mobil 1 filter.
It may sound stupid but like I said I have been all about dino oil all my life and don't want to screw up. I noticed while at the auto parts store that they sell blends and was wondering if I had to run one of these first assuming I have dino oil in the car now. Basically what I am asking is does a purely dino engine need to be weaned over to the fully synthetics?
Should I run a blend first?
The car was well taken car of so it may have Mobil 1 in it (I know that is an oxymoron) but should I flush it or use that amsoil cleaner first? Maybe that is a totally different question.
What do you think I should do?

Don't worry about switching to synthetic, you can switch to synthetic any time in a vehicle's life without any negative consequences.
It only offers benefits, there are no drawbacks to using better oil. Just change it and enjoy the piece of mind knowing your engine is better protected from friction, heat, and wear.Last edited by Wesman; 02-16-2009 at 11:00 AM.

UOAs
If you want to know for sure, get a UOA from Blackstone. If you want to know more about your oil than you thought was possible, get a UOA from Terry Dyson.
Sarge put me on to both these labs.Last edited by lonewolf37; 02-16-2009 at 12:57 PM. Reason: Updated credits

Why the switch from conventionals? What are you after you believe synthetic will give you?

Better Lubrication, consistent viscosity, less shearing.
Let me know what you think, it doesn't sound like I am wasting my money. Am I? Will I get just as much life out a my engine with dino?
I like to hit the strip 2-3 times a week and I usually get in maybe 5 runs a night. It seems that with the syn that I can chose an oil designed esentially for what I am doing. When summer gets here I will most likely switch to Red Line 10w30 or 15w40, haven't decided yet.

Well I will tell you better "lubrication" doesn't happen with synthetics. SM rated conventionals reflect equal wear in UOA's than synthetics when ran 3K or less. Viscosity and shearing I will say are better in synthetics due the add packs. Exception being Royal Purple which shears all to shit in the first 500 miles. Synthetics have stronger add packs and that is the reason I use them......with that said.....Pennzoil Platinum is the top off the shelf oil you can buy IMHO based on significant personal testing and testing off many others......as for a "boutique" oil I would go with Shaeffers or Amsoil versus Red Line....much more robust than RedLine.....

I use penzoil platinum with 2 qts of dino, usually GTX. This way you get a good blend. My 02 Z/28 is at 119000, burns about a 1/2 quart before the change oil light comes on and it is sprayed with a 100 shot.

Well here is my experience. I have 157k now as she sits in the driveway. Changed oil this weekend. I got the larger truck filter(stock ride height.. not worries) I have a issue with low idle oil pressure when its really hot outside. I bought a gallon of PP10w30 and two quarts of vr1 60 racing oil. I mixed in both of them and so far so good. Im gonna run this combo because apparently it helps my hot oil pressure a wee bit, PLUS that damn piston slap is GONE at idle with this combo. At 1700 you can hear it barely but at least it doesnt sounds so horrible at idle now. I also went back with a stock air filter from what I have read about K & N in UOAs.
Im gonna get another test kit and send this mix in with my 3100 mile PP10w30 batch ive been saving and see what happens.

I would be really interested to see that UOA. I have no idea what would happen if you mixed a synthetic 10/30 with a conventional 60.
However if you do the math, you get a pretty thick oil. Thicker than I would want to put in anything other than my lawnmower.
