Free air and water at gas stations
I am a gas station attendant and today I was called "a fucking asshole" by a customer to whom I denied free air. Before I asked him if he purchased fuel at our gas station. Only after he responded that no, he didn't I told him that he would have to pay. He got angry, tried to argue with me about the law and fiinally when I informed him of state issued board with information about existing law, the plate is located on top of the air machine and has a toll free number which he could call to complain about it, he cussed me out.
NOW
here is what law says
every service station in this state to
provide, during operating hours, water, compressed air, and a gauge
for measuring air pressure, to the public for use in servicing any
passenger or commercial vehicle, as defined.
these air and water services be made
available at no cost to customers who purchase motor vehicle fuel, as
defined.

yeah i dont see the big deal in jus letting someone fill up their damn tire. You guys are hardly making money selling freakin air. Now not only did he not buy gas, but you lost his sales for gas now forever, and everyone that he talks to when talking about buying gas. You could be right as to what the sign says but its kind of a hardass thing. If my tire was going flat and you wouldnt jus let me fill it, I'd probably cause you an asshole too.

I do it all the time. I dont think its really made public that when it says "free air" it really means free air if you buy gas here.

He bothered asking you? Why not just go over to the machine and just fill up his tires with out even going inside to ask you? Around here all the compressors are at the edge of the parking lot... almost an after thought... and are titled "FREE AIR" in large letters... not "FREE GIFT: AIR, WITH PURCHASE OF....etc". I never payed attention whether I filled my tires without getting gas... but probably did anyway because I like killing multiple birds with a single stone...

I have however been to service stations where the air machine does in fact have a timer and a coin operated power button where you have put in like 75 cents. Theres no way around that. But does your station even have a determined amount that people have to pay for air if they dont buy gas? Or did you jus pull out a number on your own?

I get air without getting gas, but I get it at the places where I always get gas.
I try to just use my own air though

read carefully
1. we offered free air up until about a month ago when our hose got pulled out and torn out for the 10th or 20th time, then the owner got pissed and put the machine that requires money/tokens to operate
2. water was and is free, right now there is no water outside cause it would freeze and blow up the pipes, you can still get it inside from the sink
3. powering the compressor costs money
4. If I recognize the face of a customer and he asks for tokens - he gets them, if a customer tells me he fills/filled up here all the time/yesterday - he gets the tokens

additionally you WILL get free air if you get gas - any amount of gas
310stanger - if you tell me that your tire is flat and you don't have money I would give you free air - there is no problem about it but I'm not gonna go against my boss and give out tokens for air for no reason, in a way I'd be risking my job

I get what you are saying for sure. I do only get the free air from stations I buy gas at, just not always when I get gas. It pisses me off when the hoses are effed up, there is no law here that states it has to be provided and the stations that do it are simply nice enough to do it, people shouldn't tear their shit up
