1999 a4 here, any tips/ steps to be careful on? what fluid for a daily driver?

Parts needed:
~4 qts dexron 3 ATF-any brand will do except walmart brand.
Socket Wrench
Tranny filter and gasket
15mm socket
Big catch pan
Short extension
Funnel for atf
Drainplug kit(optional)



1. Put on a lift
2.Let it cool for at least 10 mins(Tranny fluid is hot, and A4 has no drainplug)
3.Position catch pan under tranny
4.Get ratchet with a small extension(only need for bolts by the crossmember) and 15mm socket.
5.Lightly loosen all bolts on the pan.
6.Start to take out all pan bolts, starting with the drivers side,then the front,then back, and finally loosen passenger side, and take them out until a large amount of fluid starts to come out. The idea here is to have the fluid come out of the pan on the drivers side so it doesn't make a mess.
7.Remove old filter
8.Let fluid continue to drain out until it slows to a slow drip(there's lots of fluid in there)
9.Use a parts cleaner or carb cleaner to clean off the magnet inside the pan as well as the inside of the pan while the fluid drains.
10. Install the new filter
11.Install the gasket on the pan and put the bolts through(gasket should hold the bolts on), or if you want to make tranny fluid changes easier in the future, install your new drainplug kit. You can go by the instructions in the kit, or have the drainplug welded flush so that it lets all the fluid drain.(The washer and nut that comes with the kit will leave about 1/2 in fluid in there.)
12.Reinstall the trans pan
13.Tighten the pan bolts(I think ~20ft lbs?) Not too tight
14. Take out your trans dipstick(red one =]) and insert funnel.
15.Guesstimate how much fluid you took out, in my case it was ~4qts, and SLOWLY pour in fluid. You can put in about 3.5 qts, back out and start car, and let it warm up. Then check the fluid while the car is running. Add until it gets to around the warm mark.
16.Check for leaks
17.Drive. Should be good for another 20k at least.

I though it was five quarts for a fluid/filter change... I know its 10.8 for a complete overhaul.

When changing the fluid remove half the bolts the loosen the other side allowing the pan to drop and let some fluid out. I try to get the pan at as steep of a angle then i push it back up remove all bolts and lower it down with one hand into my catch pan.

Remember to clean the magnet and the inside of the pan. Use some weather stripping adhesive on the gasket to make it easier to reinstall the pan.

Once you have fluid in the trans sit with your foot on the brake and jump through the gears then check fluid.

No. For just doing a fluid change, you will get about 4/6 qts.
The other 2 qts. are in the tranny internals and cooler/lines. If you are swapping/rebuilding the entire trans it will take anywhere from 12 qts(stock pan) to 14 qts. (deep pan). The converter holds the rest of the fluid and cannot be changed without removal.

Once you have fluid in the trans sit with your foot on the brake and jump through the gears then check fluid

Oh yeah..I failed to mention this step.
You should do as mentioned but repeat 5x to ensure that each clutchpack has ample fluid. (Repeat until there is no stutter/vibration when you move into each gear.) Not completely necassary step, since there is still fluid circulating that didn't get changed. But I would recommend.
