'94 Firebird Formula A/C Compressor
Good morning all,
I've got a quick question for you guys. In 2010 I had my a/c compressor replaced, I had the car since 2007 at that point with no problems with the a/c system until that time. As of a week ago my a/c has stopped working, I've tried the usual suspects and thought maybe I needed to re-charge but I couldn't even trip the compressor to come on. I was able to spin it so it wasn't locked up, I'm not the best with mechanical stuff so I decided to put it in the shop.
I took it to the same guys who did my compressor in 2010, I do trust them and they have a good reputation in the area. I get a call back saying that its the compressor AGAIN. The guy tells me that the compressors that they put on the cars nowadays come in two parts which unfortunately allows them to flex which can cause leaks and problems. He cites the problem as a poor compressor design, but he does believe that's what the problem is. I point blank asked him IF I paid the $800+ to have it replaced, is there a possibility that I'll be back in two years time? He said yes it's a possibility, its poor design and they just don't make the parts like they used too. He said there's a slight chance the evaporator could have a problem but from what he's seeing, he highly doubts it.
I'm not sure what to do at this point, I've put a fair share of $$ into the car since I've had it and I don't know if its really worth it to get it repaired, especially if I don't plan to keep the car for more than 1-2 years. My question to you guys is, have you seen this sort of thing with a/c compressors in your experience? Is it really just poor design or could this mechanic be mistaken?
Appreciate your feedback,
thanks so much!

Navy Blue Metallic- 98 T/A, 00 FBVert, 78T/A
I would say it all depends on where the parts are coming from. Autozone = China.
GM certified parts would be best and should last longer.
