Confused?
I have been reading a LOT of LS series questions. What is the difference between the LS series? It's all the same block just different bore, stroke and heads right? LS1, LS2, LS6, LS7 and LSX? I have A 2001 WS6 with an LS6 intake on a LS1 motor, so what is the difference between that and a regular LS1 or LS6? Break it down for idiots like me please. I just can't figure out why I would have an LS6 intake on my LS1 and not be better than an LS2. If I had to replace my LS1 with an LS6 wouldn't that be better than an LS2?

Im sure everyone will have feedback but the answer to that question could take days to type....
Heres a few Basics, LSX is the name for the Generation 3 Chevy small block. It covers all that you listed, ls1,ls2 ls6 etc etc.
There are alot of differnces in both the block design and the application. For instance the Lq4 Was used in trucks and the ls1 was used in the F-body platform.
The ls6 intake flows better than the ls1 intake.

you could think of LS6s & LS2s as being very similer power wise, ls2 is slightly bigger but the LS6 has more agressive cam specs etc.
LS1s and 6s are the same size, again LS6 is just more agressive and freeflowing,
Wikipedia was made for these kinds of questions, if you want exact answers go there for a breakdown

LS1 & LS6 = 5.7 litre (LS6 is basically an upgraded LS1)
LS2 LQ4 LQ9 L76 = 6.0 litre (LS2 replaced LS1 in `05 an the Lq's are truck engines, the L76 is from the G8)
LS3 L92 LS9 = 6.2 litre (LS3 replaced the LS2, L92 is basically the same engine but for Truck/SUV's LS9 is ZR1 engine and has supercharger)
LS4 = 5.3 litre (Front Wheel Drive Monte Carlo SS and GXP Grand Prix)
LS7 = 7.0 litre (ZO6 only)Craig

ALL 01 and 02 cars had the ls6 intake to get rid of egr as stated above. A small amount also received the ls6 block (no performance gain in that application however). I think there is also an L99 engine too, available on the new SS (6 speed auto uses this instead of the ls3). It has 400hp as opposed to the claimed 425 of the ls3.

The LS6 intake replaced the old LS1 intake in `01 on all passenger cars.
LS1 intakes were no longer produced and also it was not totally EGR related as the `97-`00 Corvettes used the LS1 intake with no EGR provisions.

No problem
The common misconception is that there were two intakes being built at the same time. When in fact the LS6 (which gets it's name because it debuted on the `01 LS6 engine) superseded the LS1 on all passenger car engines that year. The lack of EGR on the later cars is attributed to the different (tighter LSA) 6.0 Truck camshaft used.

the only way I know would be to run the casting numbers on the block or drop the oil pan. There are no performance gains between the LS1 or LS6 blocks beyond a slightly better casting and breather windows cast into the cylinder skirts to allow for better crank case air flow.
Number for number, the rating for ls1/6 blocks in F-body cars are the same. The factory numbers you see are from the LS6 heads that were used along with some cam tweeking done on the vettes. Beyond that nothing major changed between the two blocks.
