blown tranny...where to now?
Soo after a New Jersey to South California drive, my car won't shift from 2nd to 3rd, or even 2nd to 4th or OD any more. Thankfully it crapped out in Arizona. I'd rather not have any specific broken part fixed, since that may only lead me to more broken tranny parts a few thousand miles away. A full re-build and overhaul from a mechanic quote on my 4L60E would cost me $1600. Question is, would I be better off buying a durable and fast tranny online over letting a mechanic re-build it? How much would it cost to buy a new tranny, and how much mechanical knowledge would it take? I've seen one ebay seller claim "if you can turn a wrench you can install our transmission." Does anyone know where i can get a reasonably cheap tranny (with a high-stall torque converter)?
Also, if I were to overhaul my 4L60E, what do you think is a must adding on to it? Transmission cooler? Reaction core? Corvette pistons?

oh yea...i also miss the days where i was worrying over the detailing on the paint of my car. now it seems like i can barely care over coolant, tranny, and mysterious knocks in cold weather.

well, the LS1 4L60e trans already have the 'corvette' servos. did he specify if, for that $1600, he was going to do any type of upgrades? high energy band, alto red clutches, etc... sounds like it'll be just a stock rebuild. if you are wanting better stuff, then you might want to go online and get one. only thing i'm ever worried about is if it fails, you have to take it out and ship it back for repairs. time down.

Good point on buying one online and having to ship back for warranty. You may want to call around to some shops and ask how much to install a trannie if you get it from another place. http://www.ls1.com/forums/sponsor.php has some transmissions that start around 1200 and go on up. They do have a core charge so you would need to ship your old one back. 1600 though does sound a little high if it is a stock rebuild. Make sure to check on everything that is being done and upgraded. Sunshell, clutches, servos, stall, cooler, etc. You should also talk with some people about what stall you might want based on your car's current mods, etc. You will also loose some MPG when you put a higher stall in. Vigilante is a good one and they will allow a one time re stalling so you can change the stall speed. TCI and Yank are also good. Yank tends to over state what the stall is though and TCI understates so a TCI rated at 2800 tends to be a 3000. Good luck.

Well, what I am having priced out right now from a shop nearby in Oxnard is a Jasper automatic transmission, shift kit, and a high-stall torque converter (unsure as what to use yet but thanks for the advice). I'm also having him diagnose knocking that occured when it got started up in the severe cold, figuring out why my security light is on, draining and pressure-checking my coolant (lost some fluid during a month and sludge was building up in the over-flow), servicing the axle (lost some fluid), and check to see if i am smog-legal for CA.
My car's from NJ, but I moved so it was driven cross-country. The ride was good and bad; it cleaned out my engine (oil needed to be changed every 1500 miles), cleaned out the sludge in my coolant, and stopped the engine knock on a cold start-up. On the other hand, my axle was leaking and my tranny blew. Oh well, lol. Thx for the posts.

too late...the core has already been sent out. take a look at what kind of over-hauling they do for $1983.00. Keep in mind they throw out and replace every single part that doesn't meet OEM or Jasper standards, then they test the part. Before shipping it back they test the tranny on a machine as if it were running on your car and completely re-diagnose it!
4L60E Product Updates
SHIFT CONCERN UPDATES
1) New boost valve and sleeve are installed in the transmission pump
to prevent slippage under heavy throttle and delayed reverse
engagement.
2) To also help prevent slow reverse engagement the low/reverse
checkball is removed since this part is prone to wear leading to
reverse engagement issues.
3) Modified pump slide with spacer are used to apply more consistent
pressure which in turn prevents gear slippage.
4) All individual valve body circuits are tested for accuracy and
pressure. This testing ensures that proper pressure is achieved to
prevent slipped clutches, 2-4 band failure and soft lock up which can
be caused by inproper pressures.
5) The TCC Control Valve, TCC Regulator valve and the Actuator Feed
Limit are replaced and the bores are reamed because these high wear
areas can lead to shifting problems as well as soft or no lock up
conditions.
6) The forward and reverse abuse plugs in the valve body are replaced
to prevent cross leaks that can lead to delayed reverse engagement,
3-2 shift tie up and 3-4 clutch failure.
7) New Pressure Switch Manifold is installed because this part cannot
be properly cleaned. This part ensure no wrong gear starts, and
delayed engagements.
8) New Pressure Contol Selonoids are used to prevent high or low
pressure issues which can lead to harsh or soft shifts.
QUALITY & DURABILITY UPDATES
1) The latest design sun shell is installed. This design is more
durable than the original design which could sometimes break and lead
to no reverse or loss of 2nd or 4th gear.
2) The return springs in the 3-4 clutch are removed and the exhaust
port in the separator plate is enlarged which helps prevent 3-4 clutch
failure.
3) The torque converter is remanufactured using a state-of-the-art
converter aligner/welder which holds converter runout to even tighter
tolerances than OE. This prevents pump bushing wear and front seal
leaks caused by converter vibration.
4) High energy 2-4 band is used which absorbs more heat and has
greater durability than a standard band.
5) High energy 3-4 clutch pack and increased lined clutch and steel
plates (from 6 to 7) are used for increased torque capacity which
prevents premature clutch failure.
6) Aluminum 1-2 accumulator pistons are used instead of the OE
plastic pistons which were prone to breaking. This stronger piston
prevents piston breaking which can cause low fluid pressure and burnt
clutches.
7) All new pump and case bushings are used which helps prevent loss
of fluid pressure and in turn clutch failure.
Important:

As you are well aware, the fluid cooler system is critical to the proper and warrantable service of your Jasper Transmission. Because you are inspecting and servicing the fluid cooler system during installation, it is your responsibility to verify that the system is free of contamination and has proper flow.
In order of preference, here are some options to insure proper cooler flow.
1. REPLACE WITH A NEW SYSTEM (RADIATOR).Check flow to assure lines are clear. Check for proper operation of check valve, if applicable. There are exceptions including pre 1997 E4ODs and some Chrysler applications. For these cases, JASPER provides a cooler kit to increase lube flow.
2. REPLACE WITH AN EXTERNAL SYSTEM (On applications where air flow could be restricted, a cooler fan would be required). Or install an oil to coolant style system.
3. FLUSH THE ORIGINAL SYSTEM. Hydraulic shock flushers are preferred, and the heated type are considered the best.
NOTE: FLUSH IN A CAN IS NOT CONSIDERED EFFECTIVE AND, THEREFORE, IT IS NOT AN ACCEPTABLE METHOD OF FLUSHING. In all cases, always flow test at operating temperature. Compare the volume exiting the transmission to the volume where it returns to the transmission.
