i need someones help
so yesterday i was hot roding it pretty good, and then i started to hear a knocking noise comming from the motor, so i took it over to my friends house and checked the oil level, it was 2 quarts low, so today i took it up to get an oil change. and the guys there filled it up with full synthetic castrol, but the knocking still continued, they think its the lifter...does anyone know what might be the problem?

same thing happened to me you starved your engine of oil. when that happened to mine it was a rod bearing. had to rebuild the engine

could be the valves but yea you starved your engine and chances are it is a rod bearing. listen and try to find where the knocking is coming from. Synth really wont help this type of knocking. also is it a ticking or a KNOCKING.

it is until you sling a piston through the block.the more you drive it the more damage you are going to do.right now you are beating a space as big as the piston is round and as deep as the rod bearing is thick into the head.i would at least drop the pan and replace the bad rod bearing until you can rebuild the bottom end of the motor.this will limp you a long for a bit but you are still taking a chance at blowing the motor.

yup i would just park it until you can get it fixed. i think i had 2 or 3 rod bearings that were all chewed up

so theres no way it could be the lifter?
-
03-22-2007, 12:31 PM #16
most likely not. a lifter is more of a tick verses a knock which is most likely a bearing

how much will it run me to fix it

depends on what you want to do to the engine. do you want to keep it stock or build it up. I chose to build mine up since i had it out of the car already.i spent upwards of $6000. if you keep everything stock shouldnt be much more than $2000

is that doing it yourself?

$150 for a machine shop to inspect the heads plus the cost of any bent valve stems, which most likely you have bent some. about $70 for new rod and main bearings, a little more for oversized ones if crank can be turned. most likely you wore a grove in your crank. i found a crank on here for $125 i dont reccommend welding the crank if the bearing wore it beyond having it turned. i had mine welded and it broke on the throw that was welded a year later. if all you need is turning it will cost about $100 to $150 depending if any malory (i believe is what is called) needs to be added to balance your crank. also possible, you might have cracked a piston. i did. you basically are in need of a total rebuild. dont cut corners like i did. i could have ruined my block by cutting corners. do it right and be patient. i'll have about 3,000 in my rebuild when i'm done. that's my budget anyhow. good luck
