Im changing all the fluids on my car which is a 98 z28 A4 with 143k miles. What trans fluid do you guys recommend ? i was thinking about going with pennzoils trans fluid which states its better then dexron III. And for the rear end what oil should i go with ? also which weight ? any advice is appreicated thanks!

I use what ever name brand is handy lately it has been texaco havoline tranny fluid. Also the tranny filter seal was a real bearcat to get out in mine. After messing with it for an hour, I finally drove a small screw driver behind it, crushed it and pulled it out with a pair of needle noise pliers. I used a socket to drive the new seal in.

For the transmission, go with synthetic Dexron III such as Mobil 1, Amsoil, or Redline, or you can go with the new GM fluid, which is Dexron VI. The #1 killer of auto trannies is heat, so the last thing you want is the fluid breaking down when your running it hard and the trans starts to heat up.

For the rear you'll need 75W-90 weight gear oil. For best protection and performance go with a synthetic such as Mobil 1. You'll also need a tube of limited slip additive from GM or the auto parts store.

    Hi 98Z28importslyer,

Below is the recommendation from Amsoil for your application.

    Automatic Transmission, Total Fill
    4 speed 4L60E..........11.0 quarts

    Amsoil ATF link

AMSOIL ATF is recommended for GM Dexron II, III, and VI.

    Standard Differential, Rear .....GL-5
    All Temps......75W-90
    Controlled Slip Differential, Rear .....GL-5
    All Temps......75W-90
    Differential, Rear..........3.6 pints

    Amsoil 75W-90 link

Note: AMSOIL SEVERE GEARĀ® is compatible with most limited slip differentials. If limited slip differential chatter occurs, add AMSOIL Slip-Lock friction modifier additive.

    Amsoil Slip-Lock link

Let me know if you have further questions,

For the rear end just use any 80/90 dino gear oil.

Why would you do that..75W-90 is far superior in terms of wear, protection, viscocity range, and cold and hot performance. Might as well put the better fluid in for the extra few dollars.
