Simple terms. Pulls shit out from the clear coat, that you can't get from washing. If your paint feels roughs or feathering. You should clay it.

Anything you want to know about clay bar is in the link I posted above. Here is another tip:
Take a ziploc plastic bag and put your hand inside and run it over the paint before and after clay barring. You will feel a significant difference.

GET THE TURTLE WAX CLAY KIT,or a kit that comes with prewash soap, Y2KPewterSS is right about the bag trick, you could slip-and-slide across the finished product if you do it right, and be sure to wax afterwards or else you wasted your time/money

Basically its fine sanding/polishing your clear coat. Do not finger sand. Go side to side.

I started off using Meguires on my car and never really got that "oooh - aaah" feeling. I switched to Zaino after a friend of mine did his car. Now I get that OMG look to my car. Just the other day I had someone walk up to me in the parking lot and ask me if my car was new becuase it looked so good. In his words "mint condition".

Creeper for your info all of our cars have a clear coat on top of the paint. The paint is put on in three coats and the clear is two coats. So you are not actually sanding and polishing the paint coat. When you paint the car the paint it is actually dull, the clear coat puts the deep shine in it. I know because I have painted/cleared over 200 cars when I worked for my brother who is a certified painter. Our cars are not single base like in the old days. It helps with rock chips and other debris from destroying the metal underneath. You can easily repair a clear coat cheaper than having to paint the whole car or panel. All you have to do is replace the clear coat, after feathering in the existing coat.
