Pewter- 2001 Camaro Z28 M6
AFR
is known for making a dependable quality great flowing heads, assembled with great parts. there heads have been very consistant too. But they are costly
Patriot
Is know for making a good flowing budget head, with cheaper components, and inconsistant flow number per head but the prices are very attractive. Also Patriot is know for poor/inconsistant quality (bad QC dept). BUT Since that time about 3yrs ago, Patriot has fired and hired a good staff of people. The QC dept has improved, the heads flow more consistant and the quality of parts has improved, while the price stays the same.
For the 900+ dollars you will save, I would say try the patriots. Yes you might get a set that doesnt produce as much hp as the AFRs, but if your only doing a heads/cam f-body, that hp difference wont be more then 10rwhp if that. Now if your doing a turbo ls1 then yeah you could hurt alot with a loss difference of 50+rwhp.
If your car is a DD and your only doing heads and cam, save the money and go patriot. They do a good job with customer service and warranty there work well.
Plus the money you save would make for great suspension mods, you will need it with the added power.

From what I have heard they have come along ways like said above. Sarge who has a stroker GTO swears by them. He is on his second set. The first set got messed up by a rod coming threw the block. But went right back with them and he said they ahve been nothing but helpful.

Patriot has GREAT customer service. From my experience, they went beyond what they needed to.
I am running Patriot Stage III LS6 heads milled .020"
Made 526 RWHP with my 402.
That said....I wanted the AFR heads. I still want the AFR heads. Isn't anything against Patriot.2008 Trailblazer SS

PRC heads are the new budget heads to be had. Same price and lots of good #'s and no horror stories. I'd go that rout for budget heads.

The big difference is the intake port volume.
If you have a 346 stick with the 205s makes for a better daily driver.

I have Sarge's old set of heads. Patriot has been absolutely awesome to deal with. I sent them the damaged heads, and they totally redid them, top to bottom. They might be a "budget" head, but their customer service is top notch.
Just give them a call, ask for Gunnar, and make your own decision. Like they said above, saving $900 for around 10hp is a good deal.

SLPonline sells AFR head/cam package at 3k..
they claim 525hp at engine after professional tune. 3k for 200hp gain ain't too bad.

I have the stage II Patriot heads on my built LS6 block (346 CI) and it makes 500HP at the crank. Haven't had a problem.

If you have the money, do the AFR's for sure. All the other good reasons aside, when people look under the hood, they see you are serious about making power. AFR heads stand out.

I just bought the LS1 Stage IIs for a G note from Summit for my 382 (AFR says that the 205s are good to 396 cid on an NA motor) so i will let you guys know how they look when they arrive and how they work out after I install them

Patriot is a fab shop, not an engineering shop. They make heads for lots of high-end people. But, they themselves don't really know how to engineer a super high-end, high-flow head.
They're cheaper, because there is next to nothing invested in R&D. They look at some of their customers designs, and whip something up that's similar so as to avoid patent and confidentiality issues.
The Patriot heads are a bit better than stock heads, but not worth the little bit of extra power. At the same time, I don't feel AFR or other heads are worth it either.
Unless you're doing a complete strip down and replacement of everthing from shaft to pistons to cam to intake to roller rockers to valve job to headers to reprogramming/adding computer... I don't think it's worth the money for a new set of heads. Seriously, think about it: a whopping 10-20hp gain for a $1000-$1500 investment (don't forget about labor and extra parts along the way)?!?!?!?
More power is expensive. And you get what you pay for! There is a reason Patriot's are cheaper than AFR... or Edelbrock... or Summit Racing... knowledgable engineering costs money.
If you want REAL power, you need to look at swapping a complete, powerhouse of a motor for $5000.
Just my $0.02
Regards,
Scott
