Speedometer question, RPO question
Ok, first off, my speedometer is off by 5 miles. When it reads 70, it's actually going 65. Would this be a symptom of higher gears without recalibration for the speedometer? I plan to jack it up and try the old driveshaft counting technique, and would have already if it wasn't raining all day today.
Second, the stickers were all taken off the door on my car, and I'd really like to know what the options were that were ordered with the car. Is there anywhere to find this information out? I checked with a local dealer, and the guy in the parts department said he had tried in the past and couldn't get them anywhere, but the guy I bought my WS6 from said that he had sold a Grand Prix (I think) which was also missing the RPO stickers, and he thought the buyer got them at a dealer for around 20 dollars.

Still need some help here. I've tried doing calculations, but I can't figure out which variables to use. My speedometer is off by 5 miles, give or take a couple tenths, at both 55 and 70, and 80 (only ones I've checked it at, with my GPS and by pacing another vehicle). It has 275/40/17 tires on it, so that shouldn't be it. I'm not sure about the rear end gears though, and I haven't been able to get it into my shop to count driveshaft revolutions, so how can I calculate this to figure out what the problem is?
EDIT: I ran a couple gear ratios through this: http://www.f-body.org/gears/ (3.42 and 4.10) and I'm gonna check my rpm's and my speed and see how it measures up tomorrow. So I guess I can figure this out that way.Last edited by acrylicophobia; 11-01-2006 at 06:49 PM.

What gears did the sheet say you have? I am guessing you got it, he faxed it the next day. Is it an automatic or a 6 speed, and what rpm do you run at 70?

I don't have it with me, but I'm pretty sure the sheet said it came with 3.42 gears. It's a 6-speed. I checked the RPMs at a few speeds this morning (just a few minutes ago, actually). 55 in 5th was 2000, 70 in 6th was around 1700 or 1800, and 80 in 6th was also 2000. According to this from fbody.org, with the transmission set to 98 f-body m6, tire size at 275/40/17, it matches up with 3.73 gears.
I just need to find someone to recalibrate the speedometer now. And maybe if I'm lucky, they put in some better axleshafts.

3.73s sound right, the rpms are a little high for the stock 3.42s. It's really close though, 3.73s to 3.42s isn't a big difference. I'm glad you got the VIN sheet, I was wondering if it ever came through to you

I just bought my '02 WS6 last week and have noticed the speedo is off by bout 10-12mph. Sounds like someone up graded mine to 4:10s
