Think I found my LS1
Well after almost a year of looking through autotrader, craigslist, and all that crap and eyeing T/As, Z28s, GTOs, and even a couple of C5 vettes I may finally be there. A few weeks back I found a 2000 WS6 M6. At first I passed it off due to the color (pewter) and price (asking $12,900) plus I wanted an 01 or 02, but I kept it on the radar due to the moderatly low milage ($84k). Today I was in the area of the dealership where the car is and I went and had a look, the car was as advertised, pretty good shape some issues with the tint wrinkleing on the passenger windows and some bubbling on the rear glass. There is no TCS and the only mod that I can tell is the Flowmaster exhaust. When the salesman approached me I explained what it was I was really looking for and that this ride wasn't the year or color I really wanted, then I told him I wouldnt give him more than $10,500 he tells me he may be able to work somthing out but he wants to see my credit before I can take a test drive. So I go ahead and humor him, after about 10 minutes he tells me my credit score (better than I thought, I guess 20 months of home ownership has it's rewards) and that his manager said the lowest they will go on price is $11,200 plus tax. For that price and the maximum 36 month loan I'm looking at a worst case scenario $350/month. He says hes confident I'll get approved and then gives me the option for quick test drive, so I do and everything seems good, but we only went about a half mile down the road and back since the d'ship is closing in 10 mins. and he'll give me a call Monday afternoon (car sales are illegal on Sunday in Indiana). I did a carfax and got no red flags, and it blue booked at about $11,450 in excellent condition.
A friend of mine told me $11,200 is too high and I should walk. This dude bought a 00 non WS6 A4 (with about 140k on the clock) in pewter 3 years ago for about $6000 then after his son wrecked it a couple of months back he took his insurance payout and got an 01 WS6 A4 (125k miles) in Brazen Orange for $8000 so his opinions maybe a little skewed. I was thinking of telling the salesman I'll give him the $11,200 with tax instead of plus tax which puts be back to around $10,500 before the State gets their cut. I'm thinking that since the're a Dodge/Chrysler/Jeep dealership they may be pretty desperate for a sale. I was just wondering your thoughts.

Pretty much everyone will tell you that a car is too high, I say go with what you want. I looked at the car in the link you provided, it has the lumbar/side bolster power seats, I had that in my '98 and miss them. And they don't look torn, the interior looks pretty clean. Also it has the Hurst shifter, which is way better than the other stock linkage. It may be a little overpriced, but if they agree with your price or come down some more, I say go for it. Did the diff make any noise at all, and are the sail panel subs working ok? Is there any sail panel bubbles? Those may be reasons to talk them down....if they have the car outside today, it might be a good idea to look really close at it with no salesman hovering.

If it's not 100% what you want. Don't get it, you will hate making payments on something you don't like.

Well,if you were sure you wouldnt ask us. You said it not the color you want, also it is overpriced, and your credit is good. GET WHAT YOU REALLY WANT. Yeah, it would be fun to drive around monday with a new car. But as you look out the window in 3 weeks saying, its really not what I wanted. Make a list of color, interior, options and year and do not stray. There were hundred thousand of these cars made, that is not the only one for sale. Also, check out ebay, you might have to drive, but you will want to drive the car anyway when you first get it. I drove 4 hours to get mine. I wanted a red maple formula. If I would have known there were only 5 made I proably would have given up.LOL

^^I had'nt thought of that, If I can get up there again I may check it out. I dident hear any noise in the diff, and honestly I couldent hear the stereo very well either over the exhaust and salesman yapping. There will be another, more extensive teat drive before/if I pull the trigger.

Thanks for all your input, as for the color the only thing I had against Pewter was that a friend had one in pewter and I dident want the same color as him but his is gone now, so Im thinking the pewter may be livable. As for the year, If I were to swap the intake for an LS6 would'nt that be an advantage over an 01 or 02 since it has a larger cam?

Ok now we get to call hard facts. Used car dealers are the last place I would look for a car. The cars are from, auctiona and beat to shit because 1) they are repos, or 2) From new dealer because it was beat to shit and they didnt want it on there lot. They proably paid 2 to 3 grand for the car and now they are in dream world. They start with a high price and they drop till they sell it. With a t/a they know some kid will come in and buy it. Same thing happened 20 yrs ago, just different year T/A. Go back tell them you want to buy the car today, what is the today price. Whatever they say laugh and tell them they dont want to sell a car today and walk out. Then you find out what the best price is. Remeber these guys have been dealing with tire kickers and people who want a joy ride since the car has been out there. 90% of the people didnt have a pot to piss in. Check the blue book resale value. If you pay retail you are upside down going out the door.

so wait, is this the first car youve ever purchased? i dont mean to be rude, but why the f would you run your credit before a test drive? dont you know you never run credit for anything unless youre about to sign the papers, that lowers your score. and what it sounds like is that he wanted to see your credit so he could put you into a payment that worked for him, not you. this guy sounds like a clown. and whats with the crap test drive? with the car market right now, dealers should be bending over backwards to sell cars. sounds shady, and too much $$. just my .02

There are credit card companies doing inquires all the time. But you gave all your credit info to used car salesmen. They are trying to screw you with an overpriced car, now the have ss numbers, address, bank info, moters maiden name.......

Well the dude called me yesterday and left a messageon my VM said he had "great news" and "call me back". So I do and now he says the back wants my wife to go on the loan as well, I mentioned it to her but told her not mess with it if she dident want to, then I go to work all night come home go to bed and wake up in the afternoon and theres a mesage on my phone from him telling me she never called last night. So I think I'll call him back and tell him to forget it. When he asks why I'll say I was never gonna pay $11,200 plus I found an 02 advertised fot $13,000ish on cars.com. I bet he calls me back in few days and alters the deal. Someone here asked if I'd ever financed a car before, and yes I have and as it turns out it's always been from a Chrysler/Dodge dealership and they always play these B.S. games. I did like the car though.

You're playing the game like the dealer salespeople do. Good job! If you act like you don't have to have the car right now! you can almost always get a better price. Tell him you'll pay 10,500 with tax included, like you said earlier, or you will wait until you find the exact car you want. Tell him you're not a huge fan of pewter, blah blah blah.
