Where does the LS1 pump pull oil from?
    Sure isn't the filter.

LOL....I see where your trying to go but your theory will suck like Hillary Clinton's campaign manager quickly.....here is why.....It is a pressurized oiling system...the reason one would pre fill a filter is to eliminate the time the pump has to fill the filter before the oil gets to the critical engine components at start up....you know better Luos.....

What is the order? I can't remember.
Looks like pan, pick-up, pump, windage, filter, and up to the valvetrain.

The driver side of the pump casting has a passage to feed pressurized oil through a galley in the block that runs to the back. Before getting to the back of the block, the oil travels down through the oil pan rail to the oil filter, then back up through the rear block cover to the lifter galleys and main bearing galley. From there, the oil follows the standard small-block Chevy split route of through the pushrods to the top of the engine and down to the cam, main, and rod bearings.
I guess it would be oiling the top of the motor a split second earlier, as you still have to have oil at the pump to pressurize.
I don't fill my filter. Never have as I get pressure as soon as I turn the motor over.

I figure the motor is lubricated anyhow, seeing as how I run the motor to operating temp. before removing used oil.

    NINJA EDIT:
My fault. For some reason, I will thinking the oil followed a different path.

Sure you get oil pressure right off....but that doesn't mean there is oil up top.....the system has to fully pressurize...folks think " I got oil pressure so everything is getting oiled"....not at start up with an empty filter you ain't

Luos...I know you been inside a LSX...so lets think of it this way......ever primed the pump with a drill motor? Sure you do....you know why? If you dont that sum bitch will burn up before it every runs 10 seconds.....at the least you just scored bearings and fucked up critical components...you agree? Of course you do....now why in the hell would you not pre fill a filter? Same thing man.....you prime the oil pump after a rebuild and don't pre fill your filter after an oil change? Walk me through the rational behind that.

I know exactly what you are saying.
For some reason, I had it in my head that the filter was further down the process.

With all due respect, Sarge, to me those 2 are different situations. An after rebuild start without oil pump priming would be a dryer start for alot longer time then a dry oil filter start.

Man I wish this thread would end but I can't resist to respond.

All due respect back at you friend.....my comment is geared to make people think. However I still solicit anybody's debate criteria reflecting not filling an oil filter prolongs oil getting to critical parts after and oil change versus pre filling an oil filter. Don't get frustrated with some of these discussions....many learn basics from these things......it will die and go to the archives for the search engine to find it someday

If your putting oil on the o-ring youve probably opened a new bottle of oil.. so why not fill it up.. Its not going to take 4 to 7 seconds... an ounce of prevention is a pound of cure

Why do people use these things ???

I may have not taken apart an ls1 yet but I have some plenty of sbcs. Engine theory 101

Yeah on the dirt tracker I had years ago we used a Moroso oil accumulator........we used one because as I went sideways the oil got thrown to one side of the pan and the oiler took over until the pump re-engaged with the oil in the pan......pre cursor to dry oil sump solutions....or should I say poor mans dry sump...
