thats not entirely true, ethanol + gasoline is a mixture currently used in gasoline worldwide. you can actually increase your gasolines octane by mixing in more ethanol. problem is your computer doesn't know what you're doing, with a tune and the proper hardware (ethanol likes water) you can reliably run ethanol with a small amount of gas in it if not pure ethanol. albeit with a some drop in mileage, but the point is to get off oil. ethanol also is GREAT for boosted applications. the indy cars in the 70's-80's used pure ethanol at insane levels of boost - ethanol is very kind about not detonating
i'm really curious to see what this new gen of electric cars brings. if they put the same quality batteries as are in labtops the cars should be awesome for a reasonable amount of driving between charges... i'd drive one if they get the price down and they perform

I'm not so optimistic. They can keep the electric cars. Not interested.
Prefer pure gas over any mix of ethanol. You can still avoid any ethanol mix here at some stations. Those are the only stations I currently purchase fuel from. Alcohol based fuel is highly corrosive, and not just on the fuel systems. Really don't care for it on a longevity standpoint.
Milkman is right on the money,,,,up to 30% drop in fuel economy is the result of 85% ethanol mix. Although only slightly cheaper,,,people will eventually find the cost is about the same as pure gas when they have to fill up more often. Not to mention all the other ill effects I have already mentioned earlier in this thread that E85 is already causing.

ahh one of the lucky ones, u r talkin texas though...
update on the electric cars, a british company took an astons body and put 4 electric motors and their new battery in it - the result is an electric car that does 0-60 in 4.xx seconds and only takes 10 minutes to charge (high voltage outlet required).
its called the lightning gt and is on sale in britain anyway..
the american company's are still resisting making an appealing electric car as it costs a lot up front to start production (c.e.o.'s get paid based on how much they made the company, not how much they set them up to make in the future..)
btw to drive home my point about ethanol, look what kind of mileage a porche turbo gets with it, it actually increases mileage and power.
i'm seriously looking into alternative fuels ever since premium hit $4.50. not to mention the dumbass aftermarket for lsx's is still raping people on prices.

I believe there are still many states that offer pure gasoline, Texas being one of them. Here in Ohio it's still available as well. I know of a few other midwestern states surrounding here that still have it.
Does the electric car come with a cassette player so I can play V8 sounds while I drive???

Red- 1998 Camaro SS
With my mods I run 93 octane with is $4.37 here right now. E85 is $2.99 so even with a 30% in mileage I; I'd still be saving 31.5% on fuel cost.

I am late to the show as always:
I have to agree with the other colorado guy. I have had the same vehicle for many years and 10% ethanal has been around for longer and have never seen or experienced rusted fuel lines or anything else related to fuel due to the ethanal. I am really curious to see it myself.
As for the choice being corn, I have to say that it is political and to benifit the farmers since that is what they like to grow. Sugar cane is better than corn (more btu's), and there is a plant (can't remember its name) that has more btu's than sugar cane and grows like a weed (read that as easy to grow). Why they don't use it, I can only think it is political or people are afraid to try something else.
Now, this part I am not 100% sure on, but last I heard the type of corn used to make ethanal is different than the type of corn used for human consumption. I DO know 100% that the corn used for livestock IS a different type than the corn for human consumption. If anyone has ever tried eating the corn for livestock would know why.

Hardcorn and sweetcorn is what your talking about... watched a show about that on the discovery channel and how some country is complete independent because of sugar cane fuel, but americans were ignorant because the type of corn that we use in fuels is the type we also eat. Example. ANYTHING with high fructos corn syrup. There is basically 2 major types of corn. Sweetcorn(corn on the cob) and hardcorn(fuels, livestock, other food/corn products.)
I was in Wendys with some guys at work and this older couple seen my drive up in my car(guess that i knew a lot about gas from the looks of my car) and proceeded to ask me where e85 was able to be purchased. There is NO place around here for 300 miles that sells that crap. Only 5 places in KY! He proceeded to bitch about gas prices and how it was ignorant that everyone wasnt using e85 and starting mumbling walking away. I later had the discussion after eating about alternative fuels and it got on topic of that hydrogen injection and I had to correct everyone about this topic and multiple others.
Americans biggest problem is marketing. Given example SLP and Royal Purple. If people see if enough and here how good it is.. EVEN if its a lie then people will believe it. Ethanol is a joke.
Im sticking with gasoline.Last edited by JoshieDoom; 08-16-2008 at 02:51 AM.

Do your research guys
Hey guys new to the form. Sorry so late but maybe this will help others who stumble on this form late as I did. I have not read threw every page however just gonna give some info that maybe didnt exist a couple years ago.
Let me first say that most of the info from our sweetish friend is correct. Im sick of the corn argument with the food cost and subsidies and all the garbage people argue. I love gasoline If we could still get 100+ octane at the pump for an affordable price we wouldnt need ethanol. BUT WE CANT. Ethanol will not aided by the govt. forever, true. I love gas, but I hate giving my money to those rag heads and the dems wont let us drill for oil, so gas is not getting any cheaper. How ever our growth in making ethanol has sky rocketed. Let me give you an example. Corn makes about 390 gallons of fuel per acre per year. Brazil used sugar cane, witch makes about 900 gallons per acre per year. Now the new ethanol via salt water alge. Alge exchanges more carbon dioxide than all green plans combined. So how about this we are going to make ethanol while soaking up a boat load of green house gas. So we are going to clean the air mean while making 10,000 gallons of ethanol per acre per year ( I realize it only a small 1000% form how we have been doing it). They say possible up to 20,000 an acre. There plant is already open in mexico and opening a smaller one in texas. Imagine how this can effect the price of ethanol with its availability. But keep on hating ethanol, but I want to give my money to americans rather that rag heads. I also dont want to pay $5.00 for gas like europe. I also want my car to make tons of power on the street, and i can do it with e85. Hear are some helpful links. One other thing that no one has seemed to mention is. The govt. also taxes ethanol that could be imported into the country so that american farmer can make money on there corn or sugar can for the use of ethanol. I understand it helps farmers but slows progression. Im not one to give my business to other countries but this would also lower the price of ethanol. However we wont need it anyway with algenol coming on line.
Change2e85.com
They offer flex fuel units that plug in to change the algorithms so your car can run on e85 or gas. They test all the units available and only sell the best they find.
Algenolbiofuels.com
These are the wonderful people that figured out how to make ethanol from alge.
Microfueler.com
This is e-fuel corp. These guy built a make your own ethanol at home and pump it into your car. You can use your own source for feedstock to make the ethanol or they can provide it for you recycling waste materials. The machine make e100 you mix gas and make e83 if you want.
Hope this is helpful
