Well it is SM rated....lets look under the microscope on this Rotella T5 miracle lube

2234 PPM of calcium....calcium is a cleaner/detergent...
23 PPM Boron for your seals......
Phosphorus 995 PPM Anti-Wear
Zinc 1197 PPM Anti Wear
To compare here is Royal Purple 10-30 stuff......
Calcium 1736 PPM
Boron 0
Phosphorus 788 PPM
Zinc 982
Now with all the marketing bullshit put aside and just the lab numbers.....which one looks best?

I'll save all of us some time here....
These numbers do not necesseraly result in lower wear metals as many additives/base stocks do not show up in VOA's. Only use a VOA as a "starting point" to an oils general conditions.
But to answer you question....
Some of the stoutest VOA's are
Mobil1 High Mileage
Amsoil SSO or XL lines

Hey Sarge, since I trust ur opinion on oil more than anyone else's can u make me a recommendation?
My 2001 Camaro SS has 16k miles on it. Only mods done are Lid, ORY, LT and catback. Basically a 'summer only' toy. Right now, its only had Mobil 1 10-30 in it and changed at 3000 miles.
My 2002 Grand Am GT is my daily driver and gets driven alot. I put approx 400 miles on it a week. I've been running Pennzoil Platinum 5-30 in it for the last 25k miles and I use AC Delco filters. I change the oil approx every 5k miles. Car now has 130k miles on it.
Do u think I should swich anything up? Thanks!Last edited by korndawg; 04-06-2011 at 07:08 AM.

Sarge you think me running sso 0w30 is good for alot of heavy abuse? The car now has 80,000 miles and is a street/strip car, m6 launch on slicks at 6k+, see beating on the street regular when its out. Dont drive it often but when I do I am racing. You think there be a better choice at a cheaper cost? Thinking about going with some schaffers in my DD and see how it does with a UOA.

Here's a very informative post from Compsyn.
It explains what goes into making our motor oils.

Like everything in life I need to know the reasons why.
I doesn't matter if it's politics or oil.

One thing I've learned about the oil world is that things change fairly fast.
The api started with SA and are now up to SN. What will they call the S ratings when they get passed SZ ?
