You seriously need to look into the aforementioned Subaru.
I know you wanted to stay away from imports but honestly, the Scooby meets all your criteria, gets great gas mileage, and is built to higher quality than the other cars mentioned in this thread.
Drive an Outback 3.6R.

My gf's 10 Impreza isn't a total turd. Its no rocket but it feels semi peppy. My mom's 11 Lego feels the sameway.

Like I said before, take a look at the '12 Jeep Wrangler Unlimiteds. ( That's the four door model ) They get 20 mpg's on the highway, 4 wheel drive, and American made! I "built" my Jeep on the Jeep site ( Jeep.com ), a Sport S, and it Stickers at $32,080. That's with the soft top, 5 spd auto, basic tow package, Infinity speaker system w/ subwoofer, posi rear, connectivity pkg ( bluetooth, usb port), and the Blackout option (black side bars, taillight covers, and gas cap. That's a lot of stuff for 32K.

An '81 Plymouth Reliant is what got me through college and 2 years of law school. It was an 85 h.p. beast with a bench seat and 4 speed.
I rest my case.
