good luck waiting on that...... the rumored 6 core i9 that was to come after the i7..... the one that was supposed to be built on 32nm process... you know the "gulftown" core.... it's out already.... but it's called the i7 980x. It costs 1,000 dollars and intel says that it will be their top dog processor for some time to come.

Well.... did you assemble the AMD box yet? I didn't read before you posted the ATI card. I'm sure they do unopened box returns yeah?
In multithreaded apps the i7 980x has been 50%+ faster than the i7 975extreme. Naturally since it has something like 24MB of cache and 50% more cores... it's a 12 threaded processor lol. Plus it doesn't use really any more juice since it's on a smaller process at 32nm.
If I had the money to build a PC a 980x it would be. and for a monitor?? My 46" Samsung LED LCD 240Hz HDTV. That would be sick.... I bet i'm a firmware away from 3D support on that TV.
Word has it that 3D samsungs are 240Hz sets with frame doubling giving an effective 120hz refresh in 3D mode. I therefore don't see why it's not possible.... plus they confirmed that the PS3 will get a 3d Firmware.... fingers crossed that i'm right about the TV....
But yeah... I hardly use my laptop anymore. just kind of sits there. My phone handles all my computing needs these days.

sounds like your daughter is about to get a killer AMD box.... nothing against AMD personally. I built an AMD X2 rig when they came out back in what??? 2006? It's not terrible even by todays standards lol
AMD Athlon64 X2 4200
4GB Corsair ram
2x 250GB Western Digital Caviar 7200RPM HDD's 16MB cache in a RAID 0 array
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
BFG Nvidia Geforce 8800GTS 640MB
That's the meat and potatoes of it. It's in a nice Thermaltake Tsunami Dream case. All the wires are the nice round bundled type. It's got nice blue LED's all throughout.
The last machine I put together was a beast for my grandfather.... not so hot on the video end since he is obviously not a gamer but WOW on the rest.
Core i7 920
12GB triple channel Ram
Liquid cooling with 120mm fan on the radiator
4x 500GB Western Digital Hard drives in a RAID 10 array (RAID 10 is 2 RAID 0's that are mirrored, it's great for speed and redundancy)
no fancy video card or sound card. but he is running Windows 7 Professional. I doubt an 82 year old man could even use all that grunt under the hood of that beast. it spends 99.999% of it's clock cycles at idle
