I'm pretty sure the SOCOM is still on the AR-15 platform...from my understanding, that was what it was designed for, big ass round on the smaller platform...you can also look into the .50 beowulf. only good for 200 yards, but devastating as hell in that range.

only prob is that a quality gun to shoot that round is gonna run you over $4k

Here's a photo of my State Arms .50 BMG. For comparison, the rifle behind it is a Remington Sendero Special in .300 Win. Mag with a Leupold Vari-X III 6.5-20x40. The Sendero weighs 11-ish pounds. The .50 BMG weighs 43 pounds w/o scope, so probably 44 pounds as you see it. The .50 BMG was used competitively in the Bakersfield, Ca. area and has shot 10-round 6" groups at 1000 yards. I have about $4K in it total. The Sendero as you see it was a little under $1000 and it shoots 1/2 MOA at ranges up to 500, but I haven't shot it further than that.

Both rifles (and calibers) are capable 1000 yard rigs, but if I had to tote ONE rifle, neither would be my first choice. I have a scoped M14 and a scoped DPMS Panther (both are 7.62) that would get the nod first (DPMS being favored in theory, but not "proven" since I haven't even fired it yet), because the 7.62 is a good compromise for caliber and has much better magazine capacity and sustained fire capability.

Actually it is a .50 caliber (Traditions Kentucky Long Rifle w/percussion), albeit quite less than .50 BMG. There is a .54 caliber Hawken above the mantle as well (not pictured)
