Silver- 2005 Toyota Corolla (DD)
Insurance rates are higher for younger driver's for a reason. No one can argue or dispute that.
The number of accidents is higher for younger drivers due to inexperience, regardless of whether they drive a 4 cyl or V8 (IMO).
Age does not beget maturity, and vice versae. Anyone can drive a car past its limits...the difference is a V8 will get you there much faster, and at higher speeds the accident will cause more damage/harm.
I'm not sure how we'll handle our son (3) and daugher (8 mos) when they start driving. As much as I'd like my son to have the car I wish I had at 16 (V8, RWD) we'll likely get him a "training car"...something safe, economical, and reliable akin to a Corolla or Mazda3. When he's out on his own, paying his own way, he's welcome to get whatever he wants. Until then, I love him too much to see him get hurt, and I feel giving him a high horsepower car is asking for trouble.

There was some college study on young drivers not too long back and they said that the study revealed that younger drivers lack the sense of fear compared to older drivers.
I found this to be true when I was younger also. Having a lack a fear and/or the feeling of invincibility has much to do with all of this.
Although, some older drivers like me can demonstrate that from time to time as well. Just not as often.

Thats how my parents did it... used their old accord.. then bought another accord from them with my mom co-signing.. worked 3 jobs during school... traded in the accord for a v6 camaro vert.. got my mom to co-sign for that one
but once i built enough credit I was able to get the SS all on my own at 21... which i think for a girl at least, is enough time to mature and because i worked my ass of for the car, i am much more responsible with it.
